  • Family-friendly site in the grounds of a traditional country pub
  • Stonehenge, Longleat safaris, Westbury White Horse within 45 minutes
  • Large beer garden serving good pub food
Flutter over for friendly stays at The Crown Inn, a site welcoming kids and adults in the grounds of a traditional country pub. It's 10 minutes’ drive from the Wiltshire market town of Devizes with views of the Saint Mary of the Virgin church spire from its green grounds. In the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this dog-friendly place is well located for scenic hikes and rambles among historical sites and hilly countryside: within five minutes, join the 13-mile Wansdyke Path towards Marlborough or follow the long-distance track along the Kennet and Avon Canal that connects Bristol and Reading. On wanders hereabouts, keep eyes to the hillsides… some within an easy trot are home to ancient white horses – chalk horses, that is. The White Horses of Devizes and Alton Barnes are roughly 10 minutes away and the famed Westbury White Horse is within 35 minutes. Effort-free days on site are very much in order too – fill up on local eats in the pub then nurse a drink in the beer garden while the kids play. A shower/toilet block is open at the site 24/7 and there are also drinking water facilities.

Local attractions

There’s no need to venture far for local attractions when settling in at this site: it’s a five-minute drive to spots like the Avebury Stones circle, the prehistoric artificial chalk mound of Silbury Hill and the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum. Travelling a touch further – around 10 minutes – will get you to the market town of Devizes with its castle, museum and brewery plus a whole host of shops and restaurants; Bowood House and Gardens, on the other hand, is 20 minutes’ drive for wanders around a Grade I listed Georgian country house and its 100 acres of pretty parkland. Schedule in some time to linger for longer at Lacock, a well-preserved village run by the National Trust that’s barely changed since the 19th century – so little so that it’s appeared in Downton Abbey. Recognise scenes from the series while tottering around the traditional stone cottages, old workhouse, medieval tithe barn and village church 20 minutes’ drive from The Crown Inn.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Very friendly owners and staff.
Located in the beautiful village of Bishops Cannings, once described as the most quintessential English village.
A short drive from Devizes, Avebury and Marlborough. So many historical sites within half an hour’s drive.
Plenty of space, nice and clean toilet and showers.
We didn’t eat at the pub or use the WiFi, so can’t comment on either of those.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nothing to like from the experience we had

Disliked: I was contacted the day before we were due to stay (after 3pm ) to be told that the pub had been unexpectedly closed for a week and wouldn’t be serving food, but drinks would be available.
When we arrived we attempted to enter the pub for a drink to be told we couldn’t have a drink as they were closed.
I told the woman that we were told drinks would still be available and the response I got was ‘first we are told one thing, then another…… what do you want?’ We were finally served with a drink, but seemed begrudgingly and not very welcoming! Also told we had to sit outside and could only stay til 7pm
All in all a very expensive night for a field (which later turned into a car park for a private event at the pub) without the facilities that were advertised ……

£35 for this was very overpriced and we were not given the opportunity to book anywhere else due to the late notice

From the manager: Sorry that the previous owners did not meet your expectations. We are new owners that have just taken over the campsite. Please do come again and try the site out again.

Staff were friendly, site needs some care and investment.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Location, peaceful, quiet, spacious.

Disliked: No pub food (chef had left). Toilets and ablutions not very clean. No washing up facilities. Only two toilets and showers for the entire site. Expensive for so few facilities.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice camping field and pub garden

Disliked: No chef at the pub but not forewarned and this was the reason for chosing the site. Two toilets with showers so if someone in the shower, cannot use toilet. Not many campers but had to wait an age for toilet and not very clean. Only outdoor tap appeared to be a hose for plants and worst was no washing up facilities. Very expensive considering no electric.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Amazing space behind but still connected to the pub area. Very dog friendly with lots of water stations and free Pooh bags dotted about. Staff were very friendly as were the patrons. Very homely feel and clean warm washing facilities.

Disliked: For me was that the large bins are the first thing you see and smell into the camping area, maybe a kitchen area behind the marquee for washing and cleaning up etc.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The pub, the spaciousness, the quietness.

Disliked: Only two toilets, which isn't enough when lots of people are staying. In the morning there was a wait, as everyone in the campsite wanted to use toilet and/or shower (which are in the same room). One of the toilets was not clean and didn't seem to have been attended to at the end of the evening - perhaps pub staff could do this before clocking off?

Liked: Pub was nice and staff were friendly.

Disliked: Very basic field. No level pitches.
Limited facilities.
Only 2 toilets. No facilities to wash dishes, although the staff did give us hot water from the pub.
We managed OK as there was only 6 people staying on the site.
Not sure how the site would manage during busy times.
