Wiltshire countryside and historic sites beckoning? Bella’s Thoroughfare is your ticket to the historic Roundway Down battlefield in Wiltshire, where one of the biggest battles in the English Civil War was fought on the 13th July 1643. Footpaths lead from the field into woodlands, where it’s a 10-minute walk until you are on the battlefield itself. The six-acre site is also your ticket to birdwatching, hiking or sipping on some traditional cider, for there are a variety of birds and hikes within the locality and a cider farm is just five minutes’ walk down the road. The walk to the battlefield is a prime time to look out for migratory birds and general birdlife, including buzzards, red kites, visiting house martins, swallows, pied wagtails, woodpeckers, song thrushes, peewits and barn owls. (And during the summertime, keep an eye out for bat displays on site.) There are also forest school activities that kids and adults can join (for an additional fee) when they're running; sessions can be arranged if you make sure to ask in advance. When a barbecue is in order, guests at Bella’s Thoroughfare will be pleased to know that there is a barbecue on site with two stations: one for vegetarians and one for meat-eaters. Count on a good selection of local pubs, too. There’s one 20 minutes’ walk away in Bromham and another half an hour’s walk away in Rowde. The cities of Bath and Bristol are also within a 45- to 55-minute drive of the site. Back at base, there's water and electricity, as well as a gazebo measuring three metres by three metres. Dogs are welcome on site, just as long as they're kept on a lead (there is livestock on the premises).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a wonderful stay, and really enjoyed our weekend. The campsite was quiet, yet there is a lovely pub within walking distance and a great Indian takeaway just across the road, giving the best of both worlds.

The setting is beautiful, we loved watching the sheep and horses from our tent.

The owners were very welcoming, and had lots of tips about the local area, which really helped us make the most of our stay.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This campsite was perfect for us! Julian and penny were very helpful and welcoming but let us use the area as our own. There were an abundance of amenities that we weren’t expecting such as meat grills, fire pit, and horses and sheep! It’s close to many pubs and restaurants but secluded enough that felt nearly wild. We felt extremely safe and will definitely be returning

Local attractions

You’ve ticked off one battlefield, but your historic tour of Wiltshire doesn’t have to end there. There are a couple of historic stone circles in the area. Stonehenge (35 minutes) is the best known of the two, with 13-feet-high standing stones, but there’s another in Avebury (20 minutes), along with a museum and manor house. Take a tour or a look around Bath (45 minutes) while you’re at it. The Roman baths might be your first stop, or perhaps an adorable coffee tucked away among its cobbles. The Bristol (55 minutes) harbourside is another lively spot for laidback outings, and be sure to visit the art gallery The Arnolfini while you’re in the city if you’re into the arts. Birdwatching is sorted out on site, but perhaps you’d like to have a good long look at some larger or lankier animals. Longleat (45 minutes) has a popular drive-through safari park.
