  • Peaceful furnished bell tents close to Blagdon Lake in rural Somerset
  • Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole and Bath within a 45-minute drive
  • Comfy beds with linen supplied; access to hot shower and firepit area
What a splendid location for a Somerset glamping stay – you could barely be any closer to Blagdon Lake unless you had your feet in the water. Pixie Bell Tents is in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the Nempnett Thrubwell side of the lake, around 10 minutes’ drive from the shops and pubs in Blagdon village. As you’d expect from such a pretty location, this area is top outdoor activity territory, with all sorts of trails around for walks and bike rides and fishing available on the lake. Days out are easily accessible too, with Bath, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole all within striking distance. And the tents are equally lovely, set up in a large and well-kept meadow with access to a small woodland area that’s been kitted out with solar lights and a firepit for cosy outdoor evenings. You can bring your own charcoal/wood-burning firepit if you prefer but they’ll only be allowed in the designated area. Each of the furnished tents has a double bed (bedding supplied) and two singles (bring your own bedding) but there’s no electricity so it’s a good idea to come along armed with your own lighting and a way to charge your phone if needed. (Wellies and waterproofs are also a good idea if you’re heading here outside of high summer – it can get a tad boggy in the meadow after very heavy rain). Music is permitted but only if it doesn't upset your neighbours and is turned off after 11pm. Close to the tents are the shared facilities: a toilet/shower block (with flush loos and a hot shower), a small outdoor cooking area with gas hob and a cold-water washing-up area.

Local attractions

Once you’ve taken a walk around the lake (and perhaps seen what sort of fish you can hook out of the waters), it’s time to explore more of your Somerset surroundings. If you’re after spectacular scenery, plan days out at the soaring cliffs of Cheddar Gorge and the underground caverns of Wookey Hole (both 25 minutes’ drive away). All sorts of city sights are within easy reach here too: aim for the gorgeous Royal Crescent, Pulteney Bridge and Roman Baths in Bath (40 minutes), wander around the dinky city of Wells (half an hour) or explore the museums and waterfront in Bristol (35 minutes). Elsewhere, there are independent shops and intriguing attractions galore in Glastonbury (40 minutes), or you can grab yourselves a seaside day (complete with a pier, donkey rides, fish and chips and various watersports) in Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes).

Bell tent

Liked: Just came home from a lovely 2 night stay, beds were comfy, tent was clean, so much space for the kids to run about, outdoor toys for them to play with. Kitchen facilities we all there for us to use. Loved every minute & will definitely stay here again.

Bell tent

Liked: This is a small site with 4 (or 5?) pixie bell tents. There is a communal kitchen area with 2 gas cookers and a sink with a wooden table and chairs. There are 2 toilets and one shower with hot water. The kitchen area is really well kitted out with pots and pans, a dishtowel, fairy liquid, etc. There is a big field / lawn area in front of the tents with badminton; football goal and kids slide, swings etc. The small woodland area at the back has two sets of tables & chairs with a large firepit next to each. The tents themselves each have a double bed and two singles, which are basic and I think slightly smaller than a normal (perhaps I’m just used to kingsize) but comfortable and clean. There is a small bistro set with 2 chairs, plus two small beanbags in each tent. Outside each tent there is a cooler box and a coal bbq (weber type). This was a very nice touch and worth knowing in advance. We didn’t use this as we only went for 2 nights and used the kitchen area, but if other groups were there, I’m sure we would have used it. Also, each tent has a table / bench set. A lot of what we packed, we actually didn’t need. I would personally classify this as a little more rustic than I had imagined glamping to be, but that suited me perfectly. We were treated to a lovely display of the stars and even caught a tiny bit of the meteor shower on one of the nights.

We had two of the tents and were the only group staying, so we had all the facilities to ourselves which was great. The dynamics would be a bit different if the site was full with several other groups, but not so much that it would make it unpleasant. The site is has more than enough space. There isn’t an awful lot to do on the site itself (ie this is not a site with activities, pool, etc), this was great for us but some people may want more. In the mornings we enjoyed the view with a coffee while waiting for the kids to surface (teens!). We didn’t really get to explore the area much, but it does look like a walkers paradise.

Sue was a lovely hostess and went above and beyond for us, so thank you.

Disliked: Nothing. It was just lovely.
