You may possibly hear the sound of a few animals in neighbouring fields, the odd tractor going about its business or children playing in a distant part of the farm, but otherwise it’s a very peaceful rural setup on site at Kingsettle Camping Retreat, in the Somerset countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Bruton. This is a place that’s all about enjoying nature – pitches are mown into a meadow, so you’ll be surrounded by wild grasses and flowers and may well share your space with all sorts of wildlife. Firepits are provided so you can cook dinner over a campfire while watching the sun set or keep warm while looking up into a canopy of stars overhead. Supplies for your campfire or picnic can be picked up in Bruton, which has plenty of independent shops along with a collection of lovely places to eat if you’d rather treat yourselves. There are a few country pubs around too – one of the best locally is about a five-minute drive or 45-minute walk away. Back at base, facilities have been kept simple but all essentials are covered – guests have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and places to charge gadgets. As this site is just on the edge of the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, you won’t be short of places for a scenic walk or bike ride nearby. Kingsettle is also in a handy spot for getting out and about, as within a 10-minute drive, guests can get to Stourhead's house and gardens, Hauser & Wirth Somerset or The Newt in Somerset. Also catch an event at The Bath & West Showground (20 minutes’ drive), mingle with the animals at Longleat’s safari park (25 minutes) or soak up the views at Stonehenge (35 minutes).

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful spot, the pitches are huge and the meadow and views are lush. There's a cute little games room and nice touch of little bits you can buy. The composting toilets weren't for us but completely get what they are doing. Wouldn't stop us going back. The fire pits would of been lovely if we were allowed but unfortunately due to govenmwnt warnings werent but thats out of their hands. Very much enjoyed.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Exactly as described.
Friendly host; welcoming and knowledgeable about the site and local area.
Quiet, rural, walks straight from the site.
Clean facilities and the showers were hot and best of all, no timer! Composting toilets were clean and had no unpleasant odour, impressive considering how warm it is.
Food and drinks for sale in the common room via an honesty box.

Little to no phone signal but that works sometimes.

Liked Beautiful setting and lots of space between pitches. Quiet, calm and relaxed atmosphere. Facilities are basic but great, clean and functional. Owner is very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Primitive grass campsite (no pets)

Liked A blissfuly quiet site with huge pitches The amenities, although basic, were clean and functional, in fact, the shower rooms (two sheds) were the largest I've used on a site - plenty of warm water too.
Jenny the owner took at least one turn around the site each day but stayed on the main pathway and stayed away from the actual pitches, unless she was invited over.
This site is definitely on our "we will return" list.

Disliked Definitely not a dislike, more of an obsession. The toilets on this site are of the "drop" variety which I've not had the joy of using before.
Honestly, expectations were low but I was pleasantly surprised. The whole performance is rather a quiet affair with no lingering smell asides sawdust. My wife was underwhelmed by these loo's but not enough to stop us returning. It's just something that needs getting used to.

Primitive grass campsite (large)

Liked Lovely quiet campsite. Jenny was great at communicating and checked in on you. Facilities were always clean and available.
Great walks nearby. We did Stourhead National Trust (dogs on lead) and also some of the woodland grounds of Stourhead (dogs off lead). Loved Alpine Coffee Hut just up the road at King Alfred Tower 👍
