General

  • Quiet Somerset meadow site 10 minutes' drive from Bruton
  • A 10-minute drive to Stourhead and 25 minutes to Longleat
  • Simple facilities provided, plus a firepit for each pitch

You may possibly hear the sound of a few animals in neighbouring fields, the odd tractor going about its business or children playing in a distant part of the farm, but otherwise it’s a very peaceful rural setup on site at Kingsettle Camping Retreat, in the Somerset countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Bruton.

This is a place that’s all about enjoying nature – pitches are mown into a meadow, so you’ll be surrounded by wild grasses and flowers and may well share your space with all sorts of wildlife. Firepits are provided so you can cook dinner over a campfire while watching the sun set or keep warm while looking up into a canopy of stars overhead.

Supplies for your campfire or picnic can be picked up in Bruton, which has plenty of independent shops along with a collection of lovely places to eat if you’d rather treat yourselves. There are a few country pubs around too – one of the best locally is about a five-minute drive or 45-minute walk away.

Back at base, facilities have been kept simple but all essentials are covered – guests have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and places to charge gadgets.

As this site is just on the edge of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you won’t be short of places for a scenic walk or bike ride nearby. It’s also in a handy spot for getting out and about to soak up the views at Stourhead and Stonehenge, to mingle with the animals at Longleat’s safari park or catch an event at The Bath & West Showground.

We had a wonderful stay here in early August 2022. Such a lovely and beautiful rural retreat. The pitch sizes are great and the ability to buy logs for the in-built fire pits was great too. Facilities are very clean and eco friendly and the host was really friendly and welcoming. We will definitely go back!

The tranquility. The friendliness. Lovely skyscape views to the west. Modern, clean innovative facilities, a nice clubroom in case it rains (it didn't). The gentle encouragement to conserve and recycle. The proximity to the wonderful Alfred's Tower and woodland.

    Disliked:

Nothing. A lot has been spent on clean new facilities which is appreciated.

Great hut for a few days of peace and quiet08/01/2022

  • Shepherd's hut (maximum 2 adults)
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

Peace and quiet, lovely spot - the way the meadow is cut means you have your own private area and can barely see/hear the other pitches. This hut has a private eco toilet so you don't have to walk across the field in the middle of the night! everything you could need in the hut for a few nights, bedding and towels provided, gas hob, cooking equipment, USB charger, electric and battery lights in the hut.
