  • Quiet Somerset meadow site 10 minutes' drive from Bruton
  • A 10-minute drive to Stourhead and 25 minutes to Longleat
  • Simple facilities provided, plus a firepit for each pitch
You may possibly hear the sound of a few animals in neighbouring fields, the odd tractor going about its business or children playing in a distant part of the farm, but otherwise it’s a very peaceful rural setup on site at Kingsettle Camping Retreat, in the Somerset countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Bruton. This is a place that’s all about enjoying nature – pitches are mown into a meadow, so you’ll be surrounded by wild grasses and flowers and may well share your space with all sorts of wildlife. Firepits are provided so you can cook dinner over a campfire while watching the sun set or keep warm while looking up into a canopy of stars overhead. Supplies for your campfire or picnic can be picked up in Bruton, which has plenty of independent shops along with a collection of lovely places to eat if you’d rather treat yourselves. There are a few country pubs around too – one of the best locally is about a five-minute drive or 45-minute walk away. Back at base, facilities have been kept simple but all essentials are covered – guests have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and places to charge gadgets. As this site is just on the edge of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you won’t be short of places for a scenic walk or bike ride nearby. Kingsettle is also in a handy spot for getting out and about, as within a 10-minute drive, guests can get to Stourhead's house and gardens, Hauser & Wirth Somerset or The Newt in Somerset. Also catch an event at The Bath & West Showground (20 minutes’ drive), mingle with the animals at Longleat’s safari park (25 minutes) or soak up the views at Stonehenge (35 minutes).

Non-electric grass pitch (no pets)

Liked I liked how each pitch was separated by short fence runs and wild grass really gave an element of privacy. It was so quiet and Jenny was very friendly and made sure she came round to say hi. The toilets are a novel idea and kept very clean, as was the rest of the facilities. Loved this place would definitely come back.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We have visited Jennie's campsite for the second year in a row and it's just a fantastic place. We love the quietness & spaciousness of this site. Even when we wanted to extend our stay but places were fully booked up, Jennie managed to get us a space so we could fully indulge in my birthday weekend. The toilets and showers and always clean and everyone is very friendly on the site. Definitely coming back again.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (no pets)

Liked Fantastic site - pitches are big, well marked and generously spaced. Facilities are clean and well maintained with good recycling facilities. Owner Jenny is friendly and polite, asking permission to come into my pitch (to ask if I wanted fuel for the fire pit) - this was much appreciated! Other campers were quiet and the site overall was calm and peaceful. Bonus of bats in the evening and a fabulous dawn chorus!

Local attractions

Built in the 1700s, Stourhead (10 minutes’ drive) is a National Trust-run house renowned for its Palladian-style architecture (with its exquisitely symmetrical proportions). After checking out the artworks and Chippendale furniture in the mansion, you can stroll around the spectacular gardens, centred around a lake and dotted with elegant follies. If you want to make the petrolhead in the family happy, you could take them to Haynes Motor Museum (20 minutes). Here, in a former munitions depot, is more than a century’s worth of vintage cars and motorcycles, from a 1915 Ford Model T to a Formula One Williams, plus sections devoted to luxury vehicles and microcars. Why not make like the Ancient Romans and head to the city of Bath (55 minutes)? Book yourself into a spa to soak in mineral-rich thermal waters, or simply stroll around the Georgian centre pretending to be a Jane Austen heroine (the author lived in the city in the early 1800s).
