Sunnyhill Park and Campsite: Ideal morning

General

  • Family-run site on a farm five minutes' drive from Wincanton
  • Glastonbury, Stonehenge and Longleat within 45 minutes' drive
  • Handy stopover for journeys on the A303

In days of yore, Wincanton was often used as a stopover town where folks would change horses, eat, drink and rest on their journeys between London and South West England. These days the town is an equally convenient stopping point: close to the A303 and roughly halfway between London and Exeter, this is a top location for exploring Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire.

The folks at Sunnyhill Park and Campsite are keen to uphold this tradition; their family’s been at this farm in Riding Gate (five minutes from Wincanton) for generations. Decent slumbers should be on the cards at the peaceful pitches, and there are free hot showers and firepits available to rent on site (plus a supply of logs for sale to keep the flames crackling, and a backdrop of views out over King Alfred's Tower). For seven weekends during the summer, the hay field also hosts music and storytelling events, all of which is included in the pitch price.

Eats can be acquired at nearby takeaways (which also deliver to site), restaurants, cafés and country pubs, and it’s less than a mile to the nearest pub for your evening pint(s). No promises on the fresh horses front though – they do have horses here (along with sheep, goats and chickens) but the owners would rather you leave them where you find them.

A mighty handy stopover it may be, but it’s also a fine place in its own right if you’ve got more time on your hands. Spend your Wincanton days cheering on the horses at the racecourse, visiting the Discworld Emporium or truffling out the tributes to Sir Terry Pratchett around the town centre. For more days out, Glastonbury, Longleat and Stonehenge are all within a 45-minute drive.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

On 05 and 06 August 2022, the site will host a cider folk festival with music, bar and ceilidh. Entry is included in the pitch price and note there will be music until 11pm if staying over the weekend in question.

On 26 and 27 August, the site will host music, a bar and even yoga sessions.

View was lovely and having a table and fire pit was great. Grass roots site with no frills but with a lovely view. Perfect if you want to keep your self to yourself and don’t expect anything fancy.

    Disliked:

Having someone coming to shout at us for taking up too much space before we had even unhooked and moved the van. Everything was very cobbled together but it kinda gave it some charm.

    Disliked:

Facilities were poor at best, really run down, was so shocked to pay 25 pound for that place, considering 2 days prior I paid 16 pound for a place that was immaculate. What I found particularly concerning was the barbed wire that had fallen and been hidden under low shrubs, which my dog stood on. The door to the toilets had so slammed on my partners ankle due to being installed incorrectly. Not impressed, didn't bother using the shower, left as early as possible

From the manager...

Hi
Glad you enjoyed the view and the animals

As for all the negative comments ?
Well I presume anyone with an average understanding of overheads would appreciate that £25 for 2 adults =£12.50 per head.....for FREE MUSIC FREE SHOWERS FREE USE OF FIRE PIT AND a huge space in a 6.5 acre agricultural hay field is good value......... yes the hay field does have a barbed wire fence....THE HAY FIELD IS USED AS FARM LAND 11 MONTHS OF THE YEAR!.......I can assure you the HEDGE is well established over hundreds of years and so can envelope the barbed wire rather than shrubs covering it up as .........my apologies if your dog free rangeing around the field managed to find it but as you have written it here rather than reporting it at the campsite I presume the dog was unharmed by their experience. Shower door..?.....this can only refer to the fire door in the showerblock building in the adjacent field......rather than the 2 compost toilets or outdoor showers in the hay field?....it is quite zealous maybe I should prop it open so it's not fit for purpose?

The shower block was built in the early 80s.....she is cleaned to a very high level every day by a wonderful lady called Christine who takes huge pride in turning my pigs ear into a not quite silk purse. Money has been spent on the building and more will be spent on it so I accept she is not hotel standard .......

Finally you say you wouldn't come again

I think that's wise we wouldn't want anyone here who doesn't appreciate the place or just doesn't "get it"....and I certainly would prefer to have guests who appreciate the joy of Sunnyhill

The live music and cleanliness of the toilet block. The outdoor showers were so warm and lovely also.

    Disliked:

The composting toilets. Hay field is on a hill so difficult to find somewhere to pitch a tent.

From the manager...

Glad you enjoyed the music....Cez was amazing wasn't she, you and your family seemed to enjoy it. The compost toilets aren't to everyone's taste I agree but they do save a walk to the shower block, but thank you for me turning the shower block being clean Christine will really appreciate that, she works hard to keep it clean. As for pitching a tent, yes Sunnyhill is a South facing hillside, and the hayfield is not a pitched out levelled piece of ground, there are some more level areas than where you camped though, but I thought you were enjoying being the only tent in the far valley of the field, and the space it afforded you and your family? I will endeavour to help tent dwellers to find more level ground in the future

Thank you for your review

Showers could do with an update and the hose pipe needs replacing as trying to get water was difficult

From the manager...

Thank you I am so glad you enjoyed your stay

Just to answer your points, the farm track down to us is just that a farm track so with larger vehicles it can take some negotiation, that said we have brought 35 x 12ft mobile homes down here so it is large enough for most things i think.

The showers.....they do take a battering in my reviews. They are cleaned regually and have been painted, new toilets and the actual showers are new, but i recognise they could still do with more work. I have already £1000's on trying to sort them out already, believe it or not. One problem is the water pressure and I am looking at solutions for this. It has been a re-occuring problem so it does need addressing, but when we are busy with many guests it can be an issue.
As i am sure you could see when you visited we are a work in progress and it takes a lot of pitch sales to move forward, but forward we are moving so i would hope if you revisit you will see the improvements. I am not sure which hose pipe you think needs replacing as this issue has not been reported by anyone and the customers hose pipe is new? but thank you i will double check

please do come again

Local attractions

Devotees of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books flock to Wincanton, not only to peruse the bits and bobs at the Discworld Emporium but also to hunt out the various tributes around the town; having been officially twinned with Ankh-Morpork, there are now several Discworld street names and a themed pub to be seen around the place.

Away from the fantasy world, real-life creatures can be seen in action at the racecourse (10 minutes’ drive) or on a drive through Longleat safari park (half an hour). If it’s motors that get you going, take the 15-minute drive to the Haynes Motor Museum instead.

Those with a sense of the mystic may like to peruse the famed slabs of Stonehenge (35 minutes) or head to Glastonbury Tor (45 minutes) to consider the legends that surround the ancient site. Less shrouded in mystery but still mighty pretty for a wander are the house and gorgeous gardens at National Trust-owned Stourhead (15 minutes).
