Sunnyhill Park and Campsite: Ideal morning

General

  • Family-run site on a farm five minutes' drive from Wincanton
  • Glastonbury, Stonehenge and Longleat within 45 minutes' drive
  • Handy stopover for journeys on the A303

In days of yore, Wincanton was often used as a stopover town where folks would change horses, eat, drink and rest on their journeys between London and South West England. These days the town is an equally convenient stopping point: close to the A303 and roughly halfway between London and Exeter, this is a top location for exploring Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire.

The folks at Sunnyhill Park and Campsite are keen to uphold this tradition; their family’s been at this farm in Riding Gate (five minutes from Wincanton) for generations. Decent slumbers should be on the cards at the peaceful pitches, and there are free hot showers and firepits available to rent on site (plus a supply of logs for sale to keep the flames crackling, and a backdrop of views out over King Alfred's Tower). For seven weekends during the summer, the hay field also hosts music and storytelling events, all of which is included in the pitch price.

Eats can be acquired at nearby takeaways (which also deliver to site), restaurants, cafés and country pubs, and it’s less than a mile to the nearest pub for your evening pint(s). No promises on the fresh horses front though – they do have horses here (along with sheep, goats and chickens) but the owners would rather you leave them where you find them.

A mighty handy stopover it may be, but it’s also a fine place in its own right if you’ve got more time on your hands. Spend your Wincanton days cheering on the horses at the racecourse, visiting the Discworld Emporium or truffling out the tributes to Sir Terry Pratchett around the town centre. For more days out, Glastonbury, Longleat and Stonehenge are all within a 45-minute drive.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

On 05 and 06 August 2022, the site will host a cider folk festival with music, bar and ceilidh. Entry is included in the pitch price and note there will be music until 11pm if staying over the weekend in question.

On 26 and 27 August, the site will host music, a bar and even yoga sessions.

Was a bit apprehensive having read some of the reviews but the site had everything we needed. It doesn't have manicured grass areas but a lovely view and big area where we were able to walk the dog. The shower block was very clean and I liked the artistic touches to walls and mirrors. There was also a very welcoming sitting area in the same block as the showers. I didn't have a shower but my husband did and found it to be ok. We were meeting a group of old friends at Stourhead so it was very conveniently situated for us.

You did arrive while there is end of season work going on at the back of the site so I could understand if you had mentioned that .......but strange?......different maybe and definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I do think a 2 out of 10 does show a lack of generosity of character myself when making an assessment of the place .......particularly as you expressed no issues during your stay..... and to say you liked the chickens is very odd seeing as you allowed your lose dog to chase the poor things...

Absolutely loved the shepherd’s hut- immaculate and tidy. Beautiful location with great views outside the hut. Good to have a full picnic bench right outside too. Top double (king) bed was very comfortable and cosy/warm. Didn’t need the heater on despite a cold night outside. Well supplied with tea etc. would definitely stay again.

    Disliked:

Shower block could do with a bit of an update but this wasn’t bad at all just a bit tired.

From the manager...

Absolutely loved this review

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your positive comments

As for the shower block she is a thorn in my side if I am honest and I own that we yet again need to address the issues with the building .......so I totally accept she needs work.....I hope I will finally get good reviews for my shower block next Yr but for now she is kept clean and I accept she could be better

To me this place is what camping should be. No pitches, no squashed in like sardines having to listen to next doors conversations because they are inches from you. Just loads of space, pick where you want to pitch up, toilets and showers are always spotless and the showers are hot. Chickens pottering around, a dog joined us one evening 😂 it's such a lovely relaxing place. As soon as I mentioned camping my son asked if we could go back here after our first visit a couple of years ago and we will definitely be back.

Perfect for our young one’s first ever camping trip! We were looking for something more than just a field and this delivered (beautiful views surrounded by farmland/animals). Staff and camping neighbours were very friendly and accommodating.

We loved the delivery of kindling and wood straight to the wood burner that was on our pitch (great to see free use of the wood burner equipment).

Showers were cleaned to an exceptionally high standard and the water pressure and hot water was fine for us.

This is clearly a well loved site managed by the attentive owners.

    Many thanks!

View was lovely and having a table and fire pit was great. Grass roots site with no frills but with a lovely view. Perfect if you want to keep your self to yourself and don’t expect anything fancy.

    Disliked:

Having someone coming to shout at us for taking up too much space before we had even unhooked and moved the van. Everything was very cobbled together but it kinda gave it some charm.

From the manager...

I have absolutely no idea who would have shouted at you ?.....was it another guest?..........surely if you thought one of my crew were to shout at you it would have been good to report it?....so I can only assume you offended another guest on arrival and "before we had even unhooked and moved the van" would suggest maybe you were imposing on someone else's space/view?.....

Local attractions

Devotees of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books flock to Wincanton, not only to peruse the bits and bobs at the Discworld Emporium but also to hunt out the various tributes around the town; having been officially twinned with Ankh-Morpork, there are now several Discworld street names and a themed pub to be seen around the place.

Away from the fantasy world, real-life creatures can be seen in action at the racecourse (10 minutes’ drive) or on a drive through Longleat safari park (half an hour). If it’s motors that get you going, take the 15-minute drive to the Haynes Motor Museum instead.

Those with a sense of the mystic may like to peruse the famed slabs of Stonehenge (35 minutes) or head to Glastonbury Tor (45 minutes) to consider the legends that surround the ancient site. Less shrouded in mystery but still mighty pretty for a wander are the house and gorgeous gardens at National Trust-owned Stourhead (15 minutes).
