  • Rural Somerset site crossed by a stream a five-minute drive from Frome
  • Longleat 10 minutes’ drive; Wookey Hole Caves 35 minutes
  • Play area with miniature adventure course
A gorgeously rural corner of Somerset is the setting for Seven Acres Camping Site, which stretches over (you guessed it…) seven acres on the edge of the Longleat Estate, a five-minute drive from the town of Frome. A stream runs through the site, which is just off the B3092; this makes it easy to access, but it also means you may hear some traffic noise. A railway line runs parallel to the road, too… but you might find that the jolly whistling of a passing train rather adds to the romance of camping. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Regardless, forget the possible noises and accentuate the positive, starting with oodles of space and a play area with play equipment and a miniature adventure course where the kids can climb, slide and swing to their hearts’ content (while you keep an eye on proceedings from the nearby shaded bench). Your canine companion is not left behind either, with plenty of dog-friendly walks in the surrounding area. Have a go at the circular Mells Walk (10 minutes’ drive), following the course of the Mells River; or head to Clanger Wood (20 minutes’ drive), known for its bluebell meadows and colourful butterflies. Cranborne Chase National Landscape (35 minutes) has trails leading through its distinctive landscape of chalk river valleys and escarpments; this area is also an International Dark Skies Reserve, so be sure you have all you need to stay until after sundown for some spectacular stargazing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Level pitches

Disliked Feral children
Car not being next to pitch, not clearly documented prior to booking
Lack of policing of curfew leading to lots of noise late at night
Only limited numbers of toilets (2 for a campsite of 40+)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Family friendly campsite with good amenities, wheelbarrows available for shifting camping gear, locked gated entrance, large campsite, river and woods for kids and small climbing frame for kids. Most people kept to the quiet curfew.

Disliked Have to Park far away from pitch, didn't see any staff, had ants nest under tent. No local amenities or food/drink on site and have to drive for anything. Public Washing up was often crowded with people so had to choose carefully.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked A wonderful clean site. Our pitch was lovely, slightly under the trees, which was great as it was quite hot. Toilets and showers were immaculate. They also offer a separate shower and toilet, ideal for families. Loads of room for children to play and a river that runs behind the pitches.

Disliked Nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A simple site, good value and exactly what we were looking for in a last minute, one night stay. Our little boy loved the stream and the climbing frame. We liked having the cars parked away from the tents as it meant he could just run around and play without having to worry about traffic. There were carts to help move equipment from the car to the field. We live locally so may be back for short stays again.

Disliked It was unusual not to have anyone manning the site, but we didn't have any issues whilst we were there so no problem.

Liked Such a beautiful place well maintained whilst letting nature be. All the basic amenities that you need that are clean tidy and modern. this place is perfect for those who want some time away
with their family friends or loved one's whilst surrounded by nature.
We loved the booking and access process all being self checking it keeps that feel of rocking up somewhere plotting up and sticking your feet up and not having to go through the hole checking in at reception having to tell him your life story and being told where to go, all the information was sent prior to our arrival. we had a fantastic time and are looking forward to going back.

Showerblock worked well.
Close to longleat

Disliked That there was no way of parking the car near the tent, very inconvenient when bowing up air mattress.

Local attractions

Budding zoologists might enjoy a day at Longleat (10 minutes’ drive), where you can drive through vast enclosures housing big cats, wolves and rhinos; get hopelessly lost in Britain’s largest hedge maze; and take a tour of the 16th-century stately home, with its splendid artworks and tapestries. Wookey Hole Caves (35 minutes), on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, features a subterranean network of limestone caverns and passages with evocative names like Witch’s Kitchen. After having a go at the caving experience, check out the lifesize creatures at Dinosaur Valley or unwind on the miniature golf course. Treat yourself to a visit to Bath (35 minutes). The Roman bath complex in the centre of town includes a sacred spring and a museum displaying ancient artefacts. Follow that with afternoon tea at the Regency Tea Room at the Jane Austen Centre, where you can pretend to be Emma or Mr Darcy.
