  • Peaceful West Dorset site 15 minutes’ drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • South West Coast Path 15 minutes’ drive and Lyme Regis 20 minutes
  • Large off-grid pitches on a wildflower meadow; pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Set between Lyme Regis and Bridport in the spectacular Dorset National Landscape, family-run Prime Farm Camping opened its gates for the first time in 2025. With a handful of spacious pitches on a peaceful six-acre wildflower meadow overlooking stunning Marshwood Vale, you really are surrounded by nature here. It’s the sort of place where you can wake up to the sound of songbirds, spot hares or deer during the day and watch colourful sunsets in the evening. The site is off-grid. As there is no electricity to cause light pollution, clear night skies are full of glittering stars, but bring torches with you to find your way around on cloudy evenings. Other facilities include composting toilets, a gas-heated shower and a washing-up area. Buy meat for barbecues from the nearest farm shop (10 minutes’ drive), and there’s a convenience store in Charmouth (15 minutes) as well as supermarkets in Bridport and Lyme Regis (both 20 minutes). They are your best bet for restaurants, but there are also a couple of pubs less than 10 minutes’ drive away, or 45 minutes’ walk if you want to make a night of it (that torch might come in handy too). For safety reasons, cars are not allowed on the meadow. The parking area is a couple of minutes’ walk away, and there are wheelbarrows to help you transport your gear to the pitches.

Local attractions

West Dorset’s coastline calls for a day foraging for fossils at Charmouth (15 minutes’ drive) on the Jurassic Coast, or playing in golden sand on the crescent of beach at Seatown (also 15 minutes). The pretty coastal town of Lyme Regis (20 minutes) also has a couple of beaches as well as mini golf, an amusement arcade and shops selling fossils. Pop over the county lines into Devon for the triumvirate of beaches at Seaton, Beer and Sidmouth (all about half an hour away). If you’d like to get some walking in, you can join the South West Coast Path at Charmouth and walk to Golden Cap, the highest point along the coastline. Inland, you have options among stunning landscapes in the Dorset National Landscape, and you can have a potter along the holloways – ancient sunken paths adorned with mysterious stone carvings – at Shute’s Lane (20 minutes) and Hell Lane (15 minutes). Colmer’s Hill (15 minutes) has fantastic vistas to the sea, while the ancient hill forts at Lambert’s Castle (10 minutes) and National Trust-owned Coney’s Castle (15 minutes) both have soaring views across Marshwood Vale.
