  • Peaceful farm site overlooking Dorset's Jurassic Coast
  • A 15-minute drive from Weymouth; 20 minutes from Abbotsbury
  • Firewood available and access to the South West Coast Path
This part of Dorset is bumpy by name and bumpy by nature – and so much the better, for there's much to admire from the top of these hills. This quiet farm site has views over coastal spots that you'll certainly want to snap some pics of (particularly in the evening, when golden hour lighting and a backdrop of sunlit hills make for top-notch holiday selfies). Bincombe Bumps Camping is on a working farm, so between chats with site staff and passing the time of day with the friendly cows you'll be in excellent company. As such, it's not big on frills, although it does have basics like toilets and showers. Among the main draws here are the trails (including the South West Coast Path) that stretch out from the site gate. Those roving hither and yon will find plenty of watering holes where they can stop and refuel – weary wanderers returning back to base who need help on the home stretch can find the nearest a mile away from site. At weekends, Bincombe Bumps Camping opens up its pop-up bar-restaurant. Go ahead and set up a barbecue or campfire instead if that takes your fancy (no need to find the nearest forecourt if you opt for the latter – firewood is sold on site).

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Picturesque views, friendly staff and the amenities were nice. We loved our weekend at this site. There was a nice communal seating area next to the bar and kitchen and we had a great time listening to the live music in the evening, great atmosphere! We also hired a fire pit for £15 for 2 nights including some logs.

Disliked: The kitchen food was pricey for the portion sizes, especially the halloumi fries. However, all of the food ordered was nice. The men’s toilets needed a bit more attention. Most of the toilets were blocked over the weekend. It was also difficult to get to a urinal if someone was using the sink.

From the manager: Hi Freya, Thank you for your comments. We do strive to keep the toilets as clean as possible and I apologise if they were not up to standard at certain times. The gents toilets are being refurbished for next season and hopefully this will address any issues you experienced. Our food is freshly cooked to order we strive to offer a quality product at the best price. Best regards The Bincombe Bumps Team

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Very welcoming, helpful and friendly staff. The views are incredible! Love the relaxed atmosphere and entertainment. The toilets and showers are kept very clean. Was a big advantage to have the kitchen for breakfast and dinner if we didn’t want to cook. Would love to return. My favourite campsite so far!

Disliked: I like that you can pitch up anywhere but it would be good if you got a bit of space around you as we had a family with small children and then more of their friends pitched up very close to us. Wasn’t very relaxing as they were quite noisy very early in the morning. Be prepared for strong winds up on the hill!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: HI, Thanks you for your great comments, we are so glad you had such a great time. With regard to the pitches, all guests are told on arrival that the site is very large and they should leave ample room between tents, but unfortunately this is not always adhered to. I will pass this onto the team for this year and we will reaffirm this. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Best regards The Bincombe Bumps Team

Local attractions

This stretch of coastline is a hotspot for all manner of watersports (so much so that it played host to 2012 Olympic sailing events). Head to Jurassic Coast Activities (five minutes' drive) if you fancy a pop at sea kayaking, jetskiing or windsurfing. The area is also home to plenty of family-friendly attractions: Abbotsbury (20 minutes) with its swannery and kids' adventure farm is a prime choice for tiddler-focused jaunts (it's also home to a subtropical garden that can be visited on the same ticket). The Sea Life Centre (10 minutes), which is home to impressive sand sculptures and miniature golf as well as marine critters, is also worth a gander. To be sure, there's much to be said for Weymouth's bustling beachfront (15 minutes), but local folk are more likely to be found sunbathing in secluded spots like Mupe Bay (30 minutes) or Church Ope Cove (25 minutes). True, they are harder to get to (and may involve walks from the car or venturing to the Isle of Portland), but the folk at Bincombe Bumps Camping are happy to help you locate their favourite secret spots.
