  • Family-friendly farm site with sea views, a mile from Swanage beach
  • A five-minute drive to Corfe Castle; Sandbanks Ferry 30 minutes
  • Wild camping with fresh water, toilets and showers; watersports nearby
From up high, the sea seems to wink at you from down below. Could it be saying dive in… roll down the slopes to my sandy shores? These are the views you get every day from the hilltop Whitecliff Farm, on the base of Ballard Down, where sheep and cows graze gently on grassy slopes and peer out over the sandy coastline. Overlooking the chalky Old Harry Rocks and a mile from the nearest sandy beach in Swanage, pitches here are part of an active farm site. Bring your dog along (on their best behaviour, of course), as no doubt every member of the family will be itching exploref the local countryside. Handily, the site is a 25-minute drive from the chiseled cliffs of the Jurassic Coast and right on top of a web of rural and coastal paths. Based on six acres of farmland, this is a back to basics site for tents only. Exploring can be warm and thirsty work, so keep your water bottle topped up using the fresh drinking water and rinse off any sand from the local beaches using the shower facilities and toilets. Leave the car behind if you wish, as there’s a bus stop nearby, and a local shop 10 minutes’ walk away, where you can grab extra fuel to power you through the day. Watch the sea grow closer as you head 20 minutes downhill to the centre of Swanage for more shops and some good pub grub. Will it be fish and chips beside the beach or buckets and spades on the sandy beach…?

Local attractions

It's hard to imagine the lively town of Swanage (a mile away) was once a teeny-tiny fishing port. These days, you can toot your way around town on the steam railway or find your zen in the folds of the sandy beach and its invigorating seawater. If you want to tackle the coastline in a different way, coasteer or kayak your way around the sandy shores, or add a new skill to your repertoire with a go at bushcraft, raft racing, or mountain biking the local terrain at Cumulus Outdoor Adventure (five minutes' drive). From Sandbanks Ferry (30 minutes), you can venture further afield by boat, stopping off at Poole over the pond, where the busy quayside, waterparks, and extra-long beach make an even bigger splash. Or if you want to stick to the local knockabouts, that’s fine too. You can skip between the turrets of the Norman fortress, Corfe Castle (five minutes), which dominates the local landscape, or head towards the chiselled chalky coastline (25 minutes), where there are walking and cycling routes into every nook and cranny of the Jurassic Coast.
