  • In an attractive harbour village two minutes' walk from the beach
  • Two miles from the market town of Bridport
  • Pool, paddling pool, adventure playground, climbing wall, bar and café
Dorset apple cake with clotted cream, spankingly fresh seafood, organic cheeses, sumptuous ice cream, lipsmacking local ales – no wonder so many people flock to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s old stamping ground. The first River Cottage TV shows were filmed at his smallholding near West Bay Holiday Park, where guests are perfectly placed to make the most of the farmers’ markets, restaurants and brewery tours in the pretty neighbouring town of Bridport on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. Don’t forget your bucket and spade: you can walk straight through the gates of the holiday park into West Bay’s scenic harbour and onto the stunning beach which goes on for miles. There’s no shortage of things to do on site either: wallowing about in the indoor pool, which has a separate toddlers’ pool with a slide, as well as a full-sized flume; there's also bike hire, nature trails, eclectic activities for preschoolers to teens in the well-organised kids’ clubs, a great adventure playground with a climbing wall, amusements, and free evening entertainment for the whole family in the Riverside Club. There are good basic amenities on site (including a launderette, shop and off licence, and a cash machine) as well as a bar and café with harbour views if you tire of the washing up.

Star FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Loved the location - so close to town / the harbour and the beach. Also the pitches were a bit tight to swing into but once you're in they've got lots of room. The staff were so friendly and helpful too.

Make sure you have a 25 metre electric cable as it's two pitches per hookup point and one of each set of 2 pitches is far away from the plug. We didn't have one with us but there is a fantastic camping/ caravan shop in charmouth that we got one from easily. It's only 15 minutes drive away too.

Disliked: The showers and toilets were a little basic but ok for our short stay. Could do with upgrading though definitely.

Oyster 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Lovely little site. Beautiful views from the glamping tents. Tent had everything you need. Quiet site. Staff lovely. Lovely little harbour and beach. Although the beach is pebbled. Lovely chip shop right by the site.

Disliked: Double bed had 2 single mattresses on it which made a gap in the middle. Sofa was comfy but all ripped.

Liked: Site staff all very welcoming and the Facilities were nice and clean. Good central location in village, close to the sea.
Nice fish and chip shop just opposite site, not sure where all advertised takeaway were?? We could only spot a pizza place, so very little choice!

Disliked: Site very busy, pitches and caravan all crammed in, I felt a bit like a tinned sardine. Glad we had a tent, wouldn’t want to have to get a caravan on/off touring pitches, space very tight. Noisy family close to us, not very peaceful.
WiFi available but couldn’t get signal on my pitch.

Local attractions

Start on the doorstep in West Bay itself: you could go fossil hunting underneath the sandstone cliffs, crabbing in the harbour, take a boat tour of the Jurassic Coast, or head out into the big blue yonder on a sea fishing trip; then there’s golf, paragliding, scuba diving, watersports, and excellent walking along the coastal paths… Take a break from feeding yourself up on all the gorgeous local produce to hand feed the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery, where the 600 nesting mute swans make for an impressive sight (and plenty of hungry beaks); there are also award-winning gardens and a kids' farm to explore. The coastal resort of Lyme Regis has been drawing the crowds since time immemorial and is well worth a visit; other historical gems in West Dorset include the Jacobean manor house of Mapperton, set amongst topiary, terraced gardens and rolling hills; Forde Abbey and gardens; a cluster of castles; and the giant chalk man in the hillside at Cerne Abbas. Alternatively, if there are animal addicts in your party, they'll go ape for the 240-plus inhabitants of Monkey World and potty for the penguins and underwater specimens at Weymouth Sea Life Park.
