  • Wild camping meadows with spectacular South Hams views in South Devon
  • Dartmoor National Park five minutes’ drive; Wonwell Beach 25 minutes
  • Hot showers; walks from the pitches; pubs and shops 10 minutes’ drive
Can’t decide between Devon moorland or the coast? There’s no need to make any such decisions when you stay at Cannamore Camping, a wild camping site five minutes’ drive from Dartmoor National Park and 25 minutes from the South Devon beaches on the River Erme estuary including Wonwell. On arrival on site, you’re free to pick your own camping spot, either in a wildflower meadow with wide-ranging views of the South Hams countryside or on the slightly more sheltered lower field. Wherever you pitch up, it will be in a peaceful setting surrounded only by the sounds and sights of nature. With lots of walks on grassy tracks straight from the pitches, you can exercise yourselves (and any accompanying canines, as this is a dog-friendly site), or venture out onto the moor for more robust yomps up to rocky tors or through deep gorges. The proximity to the national park makes this a handy overnight stop for long-distance cyclists and backpackers as well. And after time on the moor or messing around on the beach, you can return to your rural retreat safe in the knowledge that pristine hot showers await to wash away the exertions of the day. If you’re intending to spark up the barbecue, the nearest shop is at South Brent (10 minutes), where there are a few pubs and restaurants too.

What customers say

This peaceful campground has great views and spacious, natural sites. Guests love the spotless private restrooms and clean, hot showers. Owners Roy and Anita are super welcoming and helpful. A little road noise and occasional hot water temp issues were mentioned, but reviews are very positive. Many want to return! Recycling and solar panels are a plus.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Based on what we knew when we booked this site (that it was basic but each pitch has its own WC) it was idyllic. Level spot in a field close to a very clean portaloo. No extras, quiet and very calm. The staff were welcoming and kind.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Liked Lovely view. Large pitches in beautiful fields. Having your own key to your own private toilet, which was immaculately clean. Hot showers. The owners, Roy and Anita, were warm and welcoming, and the Shepherds hut, which you can hire, with it's own garden, looks fabulous!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful campsite, having a key to your own toilet was a really bonus, but the showers were immaculate. Roy was there to greet use on arrival. We were just on the left as you enter the site, which is perfectly small and well kept, and convenient just off the A38. We only live in Plymouth, 39 mins away, but far enough to enjoy the tranquility and a wonderful dawn chorus.

Liked Roy and Anita were very welcoming and couldn’t do enough to make our stay enjoyable. It is a beautiful peaceful site that’s is well maintained with your own private toilet per pitch and great shower facilities. It is central to a lot of places to visit. It is a credit to the owners and you couldn’t want anything more. Thankyou we will be back soon.

Local attractions

Heading into Dartmoor National Park, look out for the wild ponies roaming its craggy landscape. Clamber up to the park’s signature granite tors like Combestone (half an hour’s drive), hike up to Whitelady Waterfall in Lydford Gorge (an hour), or follow trails to the Neolithic tombs at Merrivale Prehistoric Settlement (45 minutes), and the Bronze Age monument at Fernworthy Stone Circle (50 minutes). Cyclists have miles of bridleways and byways to pedal, including the Drake’s Trail through wooded valleys and open moorland. When days on the coast are calling, make for quiet Wonwell Beach (25 minutes) for picnics and dog walks, or Mothecombe (25 minutes) for rock pooling and paddling. Busier options include the popular sands at sailing-mad Salcombe (35 minutes), and sheltered Blackpool Sands (40 minutes, it’s shingle despite its name), which has a café and lifeguards in summer. As well as the seaside, other options for family days out include the petting zoo, kids’ rollercoasters and water rides at Woodlands Family Theme Park (25 minutes), and the pint-sized recreations of English landmarks and landscapes at Babbacombe Model Village (40 minutes).
