  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away
For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east. This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches. Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day. When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

What customers say

Treacle Valley offers a laid-back vibe & lovely country views. Guests loved the clean facilities (hot showers, handy wash areas, fire pits) and helpful staff. While many enjoyed picking their own spots and the peaceful setting, some noted hilly terrain and occasional camper noise. Great value, highly recommended!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Vast site
Peaceful surroundings

Disliked A lot of the site is gently sloping
Facilities are dated
Expensive for what it is.

This is my experience of the site and I'm sure that, on a different day, it would have been far more pleasant, but I arrived on a Sunday evening where a sign told me to choose my own pitch. The site was moderately busy but plenty of areas away from other campers. Struggled with a flatter area but not the end of the world. Unfortunately, once pitched, the surrounding families were disgusting. Foul language from not only the adults but also the young children (10 and under), shouting and a blatant disregard for anyone around them. I took a walk around the rest of the site but it was pretty noisy everywhere. There didn't seem to be any policing of the site and no one enforced the noise in the evening rule so the site didn't fall quiet until well after dark and the racket started up again early in the morning with more sweating and screaming.
Unfortunately, £25 for a solo camper for what is a very basic site with dated facilities is a lot of money. During the same week I stayed at Didwell Farm for £10 (great site with fantastic facilities and also Higher Easton Farm for £15 (basic but great facilities).
Wouldn't take a lot to get this site to a slightly higher standard, and if you're going to charge this money you really need to be present and police the site you're charging for.

Primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked Lovely clean and friendly campsite with amazing views. Staff was polite and alot of the campers were regulars so obviously returning for a reason. Great cheap stay.

Disliked I parked on abit of a slope but was partly my fault as you can set up anywhere.

Primitive grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked Location. Lovely, picturesque setting, close to local supermarkets and local beaches etc.

Disliked Unfortunately, I chose a very busy time! Dizzied by a constant flow of cars to and from the short distance to the toilet facilities (!?) and woken in the middle of the night by the arrival of an ancient, noisy, camper van which decided to park inches from my tent, headlights blazing , engine chugging, whilst the four occupants deliberated loudly whether they should stay or leave! Fortunately, much to my relief, following what felt like an eternity of noisy debate, they decided to leave but it disturbed any hope I had of a peaceful night's sleep!

Roof tent primitive grass campsite

Liked Not a lot, the view was good. Toilets and showers were reasonable.

Disliked Not enough washing up facilities for the amount of people on site, too crammed and busy, lots of noise fairly late at night, generally quite rough and a real strong bad smell of pig shit. Was advertised as bing flat but was very much on a hill and we struggled to get a flat spot to pitch our roof tent.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked We arrived to a warm and friendly welcome by the staff who provided us with a fabulous detailed list of directions to specific destinations which was invaluable.

The campsite was idyllic, set in a beautiful location hugged by the surrounding hills. It was challenging to find a flat area to pitch. However, with levelling wedges firmly in place, our second night was much more comfortable.

There were lots of young families and facilities for the children to play. The toilets were highly clean, well resourced with toilet roll and soap, and offered free showers with an abundance of hot water. They were lush.

Overall, it was a great campsite. Some younger families enjoyed staying up until the early hours drinking socialising, and laughing. So it wasn't the quietest camping experience however, once they left, the whole experience transformed into a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. We had a wonderful time and our four spaniels were so calm, quiet and well behaved on their fist camping trip, we shall take them again.

Disliked It was challenging to find a spot level to pitch on. We bought levelling car wedges to help level our VW so we didn't slip down the bed during the night.

A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village. Take the kids on an animal adventure at Paignton Zoo (20 minutes) or visit the seaside towns of Torquay (15 minutes), Paignton (20 minutes), Brixham (half an hour), Shaldon (15 minutes) or Teignmouth (20 minutes) for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
