  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away
For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east. This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches. Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day. When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Nothing , nix, absolut nix

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Lovely view

Disliked Everything was awful, not one flat ground, people had there dogs off lead all the time, even confronted another camper to ask her to put dog on lead as was pooing everywhere and I got told my dogs better off a lead!! Then people were driving round at 22:30 and shouting and kids running round screaming, we were supposed to stay 3 nights but we left after one!

Primitive grass tent campsite (small)

Liked The lady that met us in reception was lovely, warm and welcoming. The toilets/showers were pretty decent. The site is a short drive from several beaches, Paignton Zoo and the town centre whilst also being rural. Stunning views.

Disliked The site doesn’t seem to be monitored in regards to their rules, this could be a really lovely campsite but numerous families with kids running riot until past 11pm and from very early in the morning, large groups of adults partying until gone 2am, people walking around drinking alcohol, lots of loud swearing, glass bottles thrown on the grass and in the entrance to the site which could be dangerous not only for children, adults but cars driving into the site ruin what it could be.

Extremely uneven ground all over, couldn’t cook and two nights of rolling off beds because we couldn’t find any spot flat enough for them. Rubbish not picked up, Ashes from previous fires dumped everywhere. As a working farm you’ll need to be a heavy sleeper or have a 3-4am wake up call from the cows.

‘Influencers’ arrived after 11pm in a convoy, very loud and speeding around the field with no regards for safety of others, and they did the same whilst filming very loudly the following morning despite young children running around.

The negatives are a shame as it has the potential to be a really lovely place to camp.

Liked Lovely views, free use of fire pit, clean toilets, showers were full of grass and hair might need to be monitored more but other than that, great.

Local attractions

For stuff to do nearby, try a visit to the historic village of Cockington, three miles away, where there's a manor house and a cricket ground plus some 16th-century thatched stone cottages and a traditional pub serving cream teas. The award-winning caves of Kents Cavern – once home to prehistoric humans – are also within easy reach of Treacle Valley; this subterranean network lies close to some spectacularly scenic coastal areas with several walking routes along Torbay's UNESCO Global Geopark – one of only seven in the UK. A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village. Take the kids on an animal adventure at Paignton Zoo (20 minutes) or visit the seaside towns of Torquay (15 minutes), Paignton (20 minutes), Brixham (half an hour), Shaldon (15 minutes) or Teignmouth (20 minutes) for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
