  • Dog-friendly south Devon rural site three miles from the coast
  • A 10-minute drive to two sandy beaches and 15 minutes to Salcombe
  • Barbecues allowed; pub and food shop two minutes’ walk away
Balancing a thirst for the sea with a craving for the countryside? Take shelter in the paddocks of Trowbridge Farm, where you can switch between walking and cycling down country routes or canoeing, surfing and paddleboarding in the ocean’s froth as you please. With grassy pitches sheltered from the sea breeze, this dog-friendly site in Devon countryside is a working farm in the village of Churchstow, 15 minutes’ drive from Salcombe. Bantham and Thurlestone beaches are within 10 minutes’ drive and the surf hotspot of Bigbury is 20 minutes away. Canine family member tagging along? Great news, you can bring one well-behaved dog per pitch (or pay extra to bring along a second furry friends). The local pub, two minutes’ walk away, was once a 13th-century abbey but it is now a place to worship food and drink, with a garden for pets to come along too. Send a postcard home or shop for essentials at the local village shop, two minutes’ stroll away, and source any extras as needed from Kingsbridge’s independent shops (not forgetting that there’s an indoor swimming pool on hand here, too). Barbecues are a great way to get dinner on the go at this site, and there are plenty of prime spots to enjoy the sloping scenery of Avon Valley while you cook – pick out Burgh Island in the distance or plot out your plan of action for the next day.

Local attractions

Safari-style amusement is on the cards at Woodlands Park (15 minutes’ drive), where real-life farm animals and zoo-themed rides are likely to keep kids entertained. If you haven’t already, you’ll certainly find your wild side at Dartmoor Zoo (35 minutes). The larger animals are a nice contrast to the cute-faced farm animals at Pennywell Farm (half an hour). As the name implies, the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes) holds many splendid sights, great for cycling or hiking between estuaries and sandy bays. Meanwhile, in Salcombe (15 minutes), you can get stuck into activities from crabbing and dinghy sailing to gin mixing and walking through the elegant Overbeck’s House and Gardens (15 minutes). In Dartmouth (half an hour), complete your seaside itinerary with cove forts and castles, watersports or a romp around the riverside shops. But hang on, why not let the tide decide? Tidal Burgh Island (20 minutes) will give you a window to explore or dine in smuggler-style restaurants.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Clean toilets and showers on site. There was a fridge freezer and a double socket available which was very useful.

Disliked: Unfortunately we had a large family pitch there tent very close to our small tent when we were out for the day. When we arrived back we felt like we needed to move our tent further away. This was the only negative on otherwise would have been a great stay.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Pleased that you enjoyed your stay on the whole, but another time do let us know if someone camps too close. The terms and conditions ask that campers pitch at least 6 m from another tent and respect each other's space so I am sure we could have sorted something. Hope to see you again another year. Best wishes from The Walters' Family

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Genuinely don’t even know where to start. I was very sketchy for this holiday as I don’t like camping. I don’t like being cold and having to walk more than 2 steps for a shower but I fell in love with Salcombe back when I was staying at a Hoseasons in April so it was the perfect spot and cheap! And my son has a disability and is 2.5years old and he loves travelling and nature so I thought I’d give it a try for him.

What a winner! I loved it! There was a charging point to charge my sons tablet. The fridge was a godsend because he’s anaphylactic to a few things so was able to store his food rather than panicking what he was going to eat everyday. A few reviews said the toilets smelt bad and I started to worry but honestly something must’ve crawled up their own nose and died because all I smelt was stick essence! The showers were just beautiful. I cannot be without a good run if shower. They were free, HOT and if they had no water left that was probably my fault for enjoying it too much lol.

The sheep who shared a little paddock in the field we’re Baa-rilliant and so were the chickens! My son was signing their names every time he saw them (very educational campsite lol!)

Some lettuce leaf said the main road ruined their holiday and to be perfectly honest, I can hear a pin drop in my sleep but I slept like a BABY this holiday. I was cold, but That’s not the campsites problem that’s mine for being a little cold blooded creature hahaha.

The sky was so clear and I managed to see a shooting star!!!! I have to say it was very romantic with my partner hahaha.

Disliked: Finally, I did drive past the entrance to it once but I wasn’t paying attention for signs (they’re small) and was focussing on my sat nav. Also, others in here were complaining about the exit onto the road and I’m not sure if the problem has been solved but I had no trouble thanks to the mirror that’s been put up!

Disliked: Showers weren’t the warmest

From the manager: So glad you enjoyed your visit. We do try to keep our showers hot enough but are mindful that children are using them too so don't want to scald anyone. Do let us know another time as we can always tweak things if needed. best wishes from The Walters' Family
