  • Rural family-run campsite over 33 acres 15 minutes from Bideford
  • In the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve
  • Pool, sun terrace, putting green and bar with verandah
Smytham Holiday Park is in north Devon in the grounds of a 17th-century manor house. Part open and part woodland, it's in its own cloistered valley with direct access to the walking and pedalling meanders of the Tarka Trail. It's also a rural and family-run campsite over 33 acres with a lot of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An outdoor solar-heated summer pool with sun terrace is on site for swimming or basking in the sun. There's also a putting green and a high-season bar with verandah from which to watch the Devon sunset. There's plenty of room for running about and play games (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted). A small play area is on site too, next to the indoor games room with air hockey, table football, table tennis and pool (another pool table, for adults only, is available in the bar). Smytham Holiday Park is a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

Powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Site was lovely and clean, good location, good size pitches, lots of facilities, bathrooms and showers were lovely and new. Also had a launderette and even a dishwasher!! Some lovely looking walks but due to the heat we didn't go far.

It's maybe a 20 mins drive to westward Ho! which was lovely and about 15mins from there to Clovelly village which is stunning

It really was a lovely place and the staff I spoke with seemed very friendly. which is why I'm gutted to have to put some "dislikes" but think it's fair to let other people booking know some of the details.

Disliked So the showers were great, but crazy powerful and you couldn't change the angle so first time I used I got all my dry clothes wet

The pool is lovely but for some reason closes at 4.30. we went on the hottest day of the year and would have been so nice if it stayed open until maybe 6pm. Particularly as it isn't staffed and the owners/managers live on site.

Also it's advertised on pitch up as having a bar and verandah however when we arrived and got a leaflet with site details it just said "bar closed" this wouldn't have been an issue however it's clearly mentioned on the advert and I noticed a review from over a year ago saying the same so they have had over a year to correct their advert.

This is quite disappointing, particularly as the site is in a great, but a little remote, location. If you advertise something you should provide it, a pet peeve of mine is false advertising, I really liked this site and would return even with this, but I just can't give it full marks because of it and I can't give 10/10 on value for money, even tho the price was good as I was paying for something that I couldn't get.

FHU grass and gravel campsite

Liked Very clean and well maintained fully serviced caravan pitch. Aerial TV reception was good plus an option to link to the post. Toilets were immaculate. Very peaceful site and walks available. The site is located far from any pub or restaurant and transport is necessary or bus at the end of the driveway.

Disliked Mobile signal from either EE or Three was practically non existent and we couldn't watch for instance i-player even through we have our own wi-fi with good aerial. Wi-fi from the site wouldn't even start to connect (we were sited on new upper level pitches).

Huge pitch! Friendly staff. Warm pool. Very impressive bathroom facilities. Everything you could want…

Local attractions

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail are accessible from Smytham Holiday Park, following the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book. Elsewhere, hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the Torridge river to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard. The area is a wildlife haven: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island. Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford, or to the clay shooting and zorbing of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park. Plant fans should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor, a mile from the manor, and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a 12th-century abbey with restored woodland gardens.
