  • Calm site in the grounds of a north Devon outdoor activity centre
  • A 15-minute stroll from Appledore; 10 minutes' drive from Westward Ho!
  • Estuary views; 10 minutes' drive to the Lundy Island ferry
Rafting, river kayaking or surfing, followed by some quiet time surrounded by green fields? That’s the catch of the day at Skern Lodge, a popular outdoor activity centre on the edge of the quiet coastal village of Appledore. With 22 acres of land to its name and direct access to the tidal waters of the Taw and Torridge estuary, this site is a prime pick for relaxing north Devon break in a gorgeous natural setting. Skern Lodge has a lush, green countryside setting, and simple facilities such as toilets, showers and a washing-up point available. The site is keen to keep its impact on the environment to an absolute minimum – once you've seen these serene surrounds, there's a strong chance you'll be keen to do the same. Head to reception upon arrival or find your way to your chosen accommodation. If you're interested in booking any activities (which depend upon availability), watersports sessions can be booked in advance or during your stay – the aforementioned rafting, river kayaking and surfing can all be tried out with full supervision from expert instructors. Appledore village centre is a 15-minute stroll away – head here for a trip to the pub, to sample local grub at an independent deli or simply for a coastal stroll. Bideford (10 minutes' drive) is also close by – make tracks here to catch the ferry out to Lundy Island (crossing time about two hours).

Camping pod (two person)

Liked: Travelled with my 6 year old son. The camping pod is warm, spacious, dry and comfortable, with incredible views and on site activities that can be booked. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and really helpful about the local area. We will definitely be returning, and next time booking more of the on-site activities available.

Camping pod (eight person)

Liked: The place look nice, we love the pods and the area. A suggestion to put at least portable tables to each pods which can be tuck in under the beds. As when you wanted to have a tea or coffe and some foods there is no available table in the pods.

Disliked: Only we don't like is the toilet for shower is too far. I can see some shower with the same colour of the pods looks like dedicated for the pods but not being use. It is ashame they are just there, locked and not being use. Rather we were instructed to use the showers which are located far from our pods. The value for money is 3 start only due to this reason.

From the manager: Hi Raymund, Thanks for taking time to review us. It is a very fair review and you are absolutely right, the new shower block was installed last year to serve the pods in exactly the way you describe. We were made aware over the winter of a water pressure issue on the mains, which meant the showers were not being served enough water flow and consequently they were burning out. We have just had the water company install a bigger feed and meter from the mains onto our land and we are 2/3 of the way through hooking the showers back up. The weather has meant this was delayed as access to the fields have been near on impossible due to the heavy rain. We apologise for the lack of explanation when you arrived, as this, i am sure, would have made the reason for not using them make sense. We are glad the rest was up to scratch and we hope to welcome you again in the future. (Nice idea of the folding table too!, we will explore this) Best wishes Rich Centre Manager.

A peaceful stay, greats views and not fighting for space.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Clean toilets and showers, not overcrowded, nice views, polite and friendly staff.

Disliked: Lack of lighting near the washing up sinks. Somewhere to dry hair… wether it be a plug socket or on the wall hair dryers. Would love to see an outdoor hose with a drying room for wetsuits.

Camping pod (eight person)

Liked: Pod was great and contained everything we needed such as bathroom, small storage area, kettle, with tea and coffee sachets. Beds all had duvets and pillows. The site was great with very clean shower facilities and lots of activities which needed to be pre-booked either online or in the site reception. The outdoor swimming pool was a favourite of our children. The village of Appledore is beautiful with a museum and small shops and cafes. The children loved crabbing off the harbour. The seaside area of Westward Ho is a couple of minutes drive away and has a small amusement arcade, cafes, pubs and a few gift shops as well as a beach which is great for body boarding/surfing.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Close to beach and (clean) toilet block. Reasonably priced. Staff were very helpful (they let us park there for one night while we bike packed to a different campsite along the Tarka Trail). You can pick where you pitch.

Disliked: The road that runs past the campsite is used frequently with lots of acceleration which made it a bit noisy.

Camping pod (eight person)

Liked: Lodges were warm and beds comfortable.

Disliked: No kitchen facilities or even a surface to put items on. Lots of the door mechanism on the showers didn’t work and the showers were out of service and a bit dirty. The pool was only available if prebooked and £40 a session with lifeguard. The greeting was basic with no explanation of where facilities were placed. The views were lovely and lots of space.

Local attractions

Where will a short walk get you? Northam Burrows Country Park (10 minutes' walk) is one place – rare plants and animals hide out there – and the North Devon Maritime Museum (20 minutes) is another. A short drive will soon get you putting holes or trotting through fields: Royal North Devon Golf Club and Follyfoot Equestrian Centre are both five minutes’ drive away. When you’re feeling like a longer journey out in search of islands, coves and cliff railways, that’s absolutely fine too. Ferries to Lundy Island depart from Bideford (10 minutes’ drive) for dramatic cliff hikes (and sea puffins if you’re lucky). You might want to go climbing cobbles and coastal paths in Clovelly (25 minutes) too, or let the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway (50 minutes) do most of the hard work for you. As for beach days, well, Westward Ho! (10 minutes) is a fine destination for practising your wave-catching skills. Ilfracombe (40 minutes) has several more beaches with more good surf, tunnels and a Victorian bathing pool. Kids asking after theme park rides? The Big Sheep (10 minutes) is an adventure park aimed at the smaller ones in your family, with attractions including live shows, rollercoasters and farm animals.
