  • Peaceful site on a working farm in the Devon countryside
  • A 30-minute drive from Bude beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • A mile and a half from the village stores, takeaway and local pub
Things are pretty chilled in West Chilla Wood – and right in the middle of this green and gorgeous slice of Devon countryside lies Hill View Farm, a quiet spot with spacious pitches. No big city noise or pollution here – just the bleating of sheep and lambs, the occasional rumble of a tractor and the sound of the wind blowing through the trees… The toilet and shower facilities here are simple and well-kept, with many a far-reaching view to take in as you potter around the site. There's plenty of room for guests, their gear and their dogs down at Hill View Farm – just make sure that any pups travelling in tow are kept on leads and at a respectful distance from the livestock. Oodles of places can be visited from this well-connected part of Devon – both the north coast beaches at Bude and the wide open spaces of Dartmoor National Park can be reached in about half an hour's drive. Closer to home – a mile and a half away, to be precise – are the handy village stores, takeaway and local pub. For a bigger supermarket, head 20 minutes down the road to Okehampton (and make sure to grab a big bag of carrots for the friendly site donkeys while you're there).

Local attractions

Keen to go out in search of carp? Anglers Paradise (five minutes' drive/20 minutes' walk) has an array of well-stocked lakes where you can try and catch a whopper. Roadford Lake (20 minutes) – a reservoir in the stunning Wolf Valley that’s surrounded by woodland, pastures and orchards – is another popular waterside haunt. See what's rustling in the reeds at its bird hide, take yourself off on a lakeside stroll or tuck into something tasty at the café. The depths of Dartmoor National Park are about half an hour's drive away – make sure to trek up at least one of its impressive tors (the views will outweigh any effort expended on the way up) and admire the waterfalls on the Canonteign Estate (an hour). On the northern edge of the national park, Okehampton Castle (20 minutes), up on a forested hill above the town, is a motte and bailey castle that history buffs won't want to miss. Bude's bevy of beaches (half an hour) are also within range, where you'll have the choice between safe, kid-friendly sands and quieter Cornish coves.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: The toilet was clean

Disliked: Poor facilities, we were charged £12 for one nights electricity, very basic site for the same price we pay for immaculate sites and facilities. Difficult to find and get to, cost us £40.80 for one night. Nothing in walking distance.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Lovely views, really lovely and quiet...host was really sweet and helpful...animals were really friendly and had a great sheep called bendy/bently who thought it was a dog....donkeys, sheep, cattle and chickens.

Disliked: If you are vegetarian or vegan it is a bit of a struggle staying here because the animals are bred for market

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: A bit of peace and quiet. Lovely views. Curious bullocks, sheep and donkeys. Sweet pet sheep 'wonky' - die to a birth defect, who clearly loved humans! Nice and clean everywhere.

Disliked: Very windy. Bit of a slope. No hot water in loo or to wash up. Only one loo & shower. Bit pricey all things considered.
