General

  • Peaceful site on a working farm in the Devon countryside
  • A 30-minute drive from Bude beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • A mile and a half from the village stores, takeaway and local pub

Things are pretty chilled in West Chilla Wood – and right in the middle of this green and gorgeous slice of Devon countryside lies Hill View Farm, a quiet spot with spacious pitches. No big city noise or pollution here – just the bleating of sheep and lambs, the occasional rumble of a tractor and the sound of the wind blowing through the trees…

The toilet and shower facilities here are simple and well-kept, with many a far-reaching view to take in as you potter around the site. There's plenty of room for guests, their gear and their dogs down at Hill View Farm – just make sure that any pups travelling in tow are kept on leads and at a respectful distance from the livestock.

Oodles of places can be visited from this well-connected part of Devon – both the north coast beaches at Bude and the wide open spaces of Dartmoor National Park can be reached in about half an hour's drive.

Closer to home – a mile and a half away, to be precise – are the handy village stores, takeaway and local pub. For a bigger supermarket, head 20 minutes down the road to Okehampton (and make sure to grab a big bag of carrots for the friendly site donkeys while you're there).

The view was amazing and waking up to the sheep and donkeys in the field. Nice hard standing. Electric hook up close to pitch. Lovely greeting on our arrival. Shower and toilet very clean. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, shame it was our last night in the area.

    Disliked:

There was nothing we disliked. Slightly improved facilities (a couple of extra showers and toilets) but the owner explained that this was in his plans.

    Disliked:

Only a single loo and a single shower. Luckily, the site was quiet when we were there, but had there been even just two or three more tents, there might have been lots of queuing! Fine for those with their own facilities.

The owner greeting us on arrival, once set up came to make sure we were settled, amazing view across the country side. It was lovely having the donkeys and sheep grazing so close to us, very peaceful, no one bothered us was left to chill. Paul the owner was always about, always chatty, always greeting us with a smile as well as his wife. A very enjoyable and relaxing place to stay. On booking I required to be placed as close to toilet and shower due to disability, they placed us next to the facilities which I was extremely grateful.

    Disliked:

I booked to be placed to have use of electric which was £161.00 +£49.00 for my two dogs a total of £210.00, I paid £31.50 deposit so £ 178.50 to pay on our arrival, but when we arrived we paid the balance plus another £45 as they said we booked non electric, not thinking we paid, I checked when we got home, I did book electric, so disappointed with what we paid out as there was only one toilet one shower and one place to wash dishes, pitches where too close together others would see you in and out of toilet and shower as doors opened directly onto the first campers pitch, which made us feel a bit exposed, but must say we're kept clean, extremely over priced.

There was one toilet and one shower which was ok for the first midweek nights but at the weekendots of campers came and the facilities are t up to it.
No running hot water in wash in hand basin or washing up sink.
    Recycling was hit and miss.

Very small site, best if you have own facilities, beautiful spot.09/02/2020

  • Liked:

Beautiful peaceful spot, wonderful views and feels remote although it was easy to find from the village. The facilities that we used were clean and well kept. Good communication with the site owner when we needed to postpone our arrival. Would be ideal for overnight stay in a motorhome (i.e. where you have your own facilities and space to relax in) or to use as a base for local walks and exploring. One toilet, one shower, one washing up sink, drinking water and chemical disposal point available. Our pitch was clearly signposted when we arrived.

    Disliked:

Just not suitable for us as a family owing to the overall small size of the site (very limited space for being outside your vehicle or for children to run around) and close proximity to other vehicles. Small strip of grass in front of the hardstanding not big enough for our awning, which in our case was essential. Some photos on Pitchup appear to show larger grass areas so it may be that other spaces were available for use in previous seasons, but this was not representative of what we found. Just to emphasise that the site is absolutely fine for what it is, but be aware that this is not a site you can relax and spread out in, especially with children. I have given it three stars in relation to how it suited our needs, but others with different requirements will rate it more highly.

The family that run the campsite. They were really helpful, very accommodating, and their little lad was brilliant and friendly.

    Disliked:

The mud (that couldn’t be helped as the weather had been awful) The campsite could do with a little area for the kids to play. Only one shower and toilet (both were really clean)

Local attractions

Keen to go out in search of carp? Anglers Paradise (five minutes' drive/20 minutes' walk) has an array of well-stocked lakes where you can try and catch a whopper. Roadford Lake (20 minutes) – a reservoir in the stunning Wolf Valley that’s surrounded by woodland, pastures and orchards – is another popular waterside haunt. See what's rustling in the reeds at its bird hide, take yourself off on a lakeside stroll or tuck into something tasty at the café.

The depths of Dartmoor National Park are about half an hour's drive away – make sure to trek up at least one of its impressive tors (the views will outweigh any effort expended on the way up) and admire the waterfalls on the Canonteign Estate (an hour). On the northern edge of the national park, Okehampton Castle (20 minutes), up on a forested hill above the town, is a motte and bailey castle that history buffs won't want to miss.

Bude's bevy of beaches (half an hour) are also within range, where you'll have the choice between safe, kid-friendly sands and quieter Cornish coves.
