  • Site with stunning Atlantic Ocean, countryside and sunset views
  • A 15-minute drive from Bude, Summerleaze beach and Tamar Lakes
  • Horse riding, rock climbing, abseiling, fishing and golfing nearby
Fittingly, considering its name, northern Cornwall site Atlantic Horizons has some rather stunning ocean views that are well worth swooning over. But whether you’ll have much time to sit and stare into the distance while at this park is questionable – a 15-minute drive from the surfing shores of Bude, it’s far too close to some of the region’s top sights for you to risk having a rest and missing out on the adventures. Activities like cycling, horse riding, rock climbing, abseiling, fishing and golfing are all close by: just ask on site for more details on where and how to have a go at these, then follow up with grub at local establishments including some top tearooms and a 13th-century pub (10 minutes’ drive). Eager to roam? Hiking paths are accessible from the park on foot, with many public trails going through woodland and meadows as well as across the cliffs of the South West Coast Path. Back on base, the facilities at Atlantic Horizons (which aims to be as eco-friendly as possible with a focus on leaving a minimal carbon footprint) include multi-gender shower room and washroom facilities. Picnic tables are scattered across the grounds and there’s a cold-water tap, an open-air heated shower and an outdoor sink for cleaning cutlery and dishes.

Lundy bell tent

Liked: The site is amazing! Sharon and Charles with their sons have really got this site right. The range of yurts offer something for everyone, single, couple, families, groups etc. The site is so well spaced out that you are not disturbed by anyone even if the site was full. The facilities are fantastic and have everything you could ever need. On a Friday there is an onsite Pizza van selling homemade pizzas to order, amazing quality. We cant wait to go again!

Disliked: Nothing

Tamar shepherd's hut

Liked: The site is small and quiet/relaxed and has great views out over the sea with an amazing sunset. It has good facilities and is generally very well kept. The hosts are welcoming and friendly with some nice little touches. Cool pack freezer, honesty box for eggs and fire pit wood (even with option for online payment!) for example.

Disliked: Nothing really. All as expected from what we’d seen when booking.

Local attractions

So which expeditions should you choose first? Well, chances to try out all sorts of watersports are available nearby, including surfing and coasteering at Bude (15 minutes) and Summerleaze beaches (half an hour’s drive), or you could learn to kayak, canoe, paddleboard, sail or windsurf at the Tamar Lakes (15 minutes). Atlantic Horizons is also about the same distance from pretty Sandymouth bay and a trio of top moors – Bodmin, Exmoor and Dartmoor – are within an hour’s drive for walks in the wilderness. If the kids aren’t into muddy strolls but are keen on adrenaline-spiking activities, take them to The Milky Way Adventure Park (15 minutes) for a whirl on the Cosmic Typhoon rollercoaster, then let their heart rate return to normal during restful times with the animals at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (30 minutes). The BIG Sheep, a farm-themed amusement park (25 minutes), is also a winner with the miniature humans, and you pretty much can't go wrong with a session on the wide sands of Crooklets and Westward Ho! beaches (20 and 25 minutes, respectively) during sunnier days.
