General

  • Simple rural campsite in a grassy West Sussex meadow
  • A 15-minute walk from Amberley station; Arundel a 10-minute drive
  • Direct access to the South Downs Way; river Arun a few minutes' walk

Made it to the midpoint of the South Downs Way? Then take a break at Houghton Farm, a peaceful West Sussex site a few metres from this 100-mile trail's exact halfway mark. Not just wayfaring walkers will be interested by this site, though, and all comers can expect a warm welcome here (including dogs).

This quiet farm site is made up of a large grassy meadow and has facilities like portaloos, a water tap and a waste disposal point. Basic, to be sure, but with spectacular views over the local countryside that make trips here very worthwhile indeed. For evening sunset strolls or a spot of inland navigation, you're also a few minutes' walk from the gorgeous river Arun.

Based on the edge of Houghton, a tiny South Downs village, the campsite is about a five-minute walk from the local pub. Other convenient amenities in the local area include bus stops (five minutes' walk), Amberley station (15 minutes) and a riverside café (15 minutes), where cycle and boat hire are available.

Slightly further afield are Amberley Museum (20 minutes), an open-air vintage vehicles hub based in a former quarry, and Amberley village centre (half an hour), where there's a food shop and a couple more fine pubs to try out.

    Disliked:

Compared to every other campsite we have stayed for at this price facilities really were minimal. Which is fine, they don't claim to have more facilities, however the facilities could at least have been better maintained. The grass was long so every time you walked to the loos or water your feet got soaked. The toilets were disgusting and the campsite hosts evidently try and blame the guests. At one point we saw the host unblock the toilet with a big stick then just wipe it on the grass and put it in his car without washing hands.
    We won't be staying again.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed our location.

The campsite is basic and, as you say, it doesnt claim to be anything else. The concept of pop up campsites through Pitch up gives people access to some very beautiful parts of the country where they would not have been able to camp in otherwise. It is a farm site, the clipped lawns of Wimbledon it is not.

As to the portaloos and my, now infamous it seems, stick I would comment as follows:
1. I am not sure I know of any other way of clearing the detritis from the flap of a portaloo other than some sort of stick.
2. The functionality of a portaloo is that the detritus falls into disinfectant and it was simply the excess disinfectant that was wiped on the grass.
3. I did wash my hands because each loo has a sanitiser point in it. (that is until on the last weekend someone stole one of them and all the loo roll)

So I am sorry you wont be coming again but we tried to provide a basic and simple site so that people could enjoy our beatiful area.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We hope you enjoyed your stay.

I have resigned myself to the fact that not many people like portaloos! But it is a trade off - a beautiful location like ours needs minimalist facilities or else it all becomes a bit of an eyesore!

Great location, right on the South Downs Way. Access to Amberley and the train station.
Field was well kept and easy to access.

    Disliked:

Perhaps it was my naivety, but when I read 'does not have on site showers' I thought there would be at least a sink and some hot water.
The description should have been - Lovely field with tap and portaloos.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and I am glad you enjoyed the location.

I think that the site is listed on Pitchup as grass pitch, no electric with portaloos!
