Made it to the midpoint of the South Downs Way? Then take a break at Houghton Farm, a peaceful West Sussex site a few metres from this 100-mile trail's exact halfway mark. Not just wayfaring walkers will be interested by this site, though, and all comers can expect a warm welcome here (including dogs). This quiet farm site is made up of a large grassy meadow and has facilities like portable toilets, a water tap and a waste disposal point. Basic, to be sure, but with spectacular views over the local countryside that make trips here very worthwhile indeed. For evening sunset strolls or a spot of inland navigation, you're also a few minutes' walk from the gorgeous river Arun. Based on the edge of Houghton, a tiny South Downs village, the campsite is about a five-minute walk from the local pub. Other convenient amenities in the local area include bus stops (five minutes' walk), Amberley station (15 minutes) and a riverside café (15 minutes), where cycle and boat hire are available. Slightly further afield are Amberley Museum (20 minutes), an open-air vintage vehicles hub based in a former quarry, and Amberley village centre (half an hour), where there's a food shop and a couple more fine pubs to try out.
