  • Dog-friendly farm site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Devil's Dyke; half an hour from Brighton beach
  • Firepit and barbecue provided; access to the Downs Link route
Looking for a peaceful stay on the edge of the South Downs National Park? Touch down at Kings Barn Camping. A small rural site on a working farm with a small stream and splendid scenery over the South Downs, this is really a rather relaxed escape that's also 10 minutes’ drive away from the coast. If you’re thinking about putting your cooking skills to the test, there's a firepit/barbecue provided with every grassy pitch, each of which is large enough that you’ll have your own peaceful space. Those who care about preserving the planet will surely love the fact that this site also plays its part in caring for the environment and aims for sustainability. As a nod to that, there are four composting loos on site (with little luxury touches so you won't miss the flush…) When you want to wash off the scent of the campfire, there are two heated showers on site, and there's also a washing-up area provided. On top of that, wheelbarrows are available to help you ferry your kit between your vehicle and the pitch (parking is a short distance away). Let the friendly faces point you in the direction of the South Downs Way and the Downs Link route, which are very nearby. When you fancy eating out, it’s a straightforward walk or short drive to shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs in Steyning or Bramber, both five minutes’ drive away. If you're after a bit more choice, there are lots of varied eats in Brighton, under half an hour’s drive away.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Loved the peace and quiet, the views, that it's a small site (and empty on my trip). The campervan pitches are flat and vast. The tap for water is closeby, loos are spotless and zero smell. The rain showers were warm and spacious. 'Kitchen' is an open air sink, but with hot water on tap and allowed for dish washing. The area is lovely and dark so star spotting pretty good too. Special thanks to Will for checking in with me before I arrived to ensure a smooth stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Not my first time at Kings Barn Campsite and there’s a very good reason for that! Last time I cycled with my son for a night away and this time I drove with a friend for a night, which turned out to be another amazing stay. You’re surrounded by views of the South Downs whilst having plenty of privacy on-site. There are loads of pitches, cleverly cut out in the long grass within one of the cow fields. As a pop up campsite, its sadly temporary and gets mowed back down at the end of the season so the cows can be let back in. But whilst the campsite is there, the cows are your friendly, nosey neighbours that come to say hello now and again. It also backs onto the River Adur and has a footpath to connect to public footpaths leading to Upper Beeding if you wanted a stroll. There are signs to show you where to go. The site is also really well positioned, literally on the Downs Link, so is really accessible via car, bike and on on foot. Blink and you’ll miss the gate which has a modest sign to direct you in but that just makes it fun and exciting as it’s almost a bit of a secret place. The signage on site is really lovely and maintains a modest friendly feel to your stay. The facilities are great. Home built compost loos, shower cubicles and even a washing up area. They are all brilliantly designed and maintained very well. There’s even some decor in the toilets - super sweet and almost homely. There’s drinking water available at a couple of points on site so you don’t need to worry about bringing lots of water bottles. Oh and there’s even a little area with chair and tables to eat or drink at if needed. You get a regular visit from the owners Jaz & Will who are super friendly and welcoming. You can buy firewood (& marshmallows) from them very easily. They can do cash or card so no problems with money transactions. Their communication is also great. Very easy to get hold of them if you need to and they always reply promptly. I missed them as we went strolling and couldn’t get wood for our fire, but they’d left me a message and told me there was some wood left out for us if we wanted it! So thoughtful!! As a novice camper, I really took a step into the deep end of camping with wild camping at Kings Barn but I would go back again and again if I could! It’s a real shame that’s a pop up campsite and is only around for a short while as I would probably go most of the year, especially as it’s so accessible from the Downs Link; crossing my fingers that it pops back up again next year!

Disliked: Honestly I cannot think of anything. Facilities great, site great, owners great. So nothing to dislike!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: The simplicity of the site yet everything was there you needed. Toilets even though composting were better than many and clean, showers fantastic, the whole experience makes me want to come again and the setting is fab. They even called me on my way to see if I wanted any fire wood for the fire pit - They shame so many others

Disliked: Nothing
