  • Spacious riverside site in the Kent countryside
  • Hever Castle and National Trust - Chartwell both 10 minutes’ drive
  • Off-grid pitches within five minutes’ walk of a pub, shop and tearoom
Looking to escape the crowds and spend some time in the countryside? River Field is a peaceful, family-run pop-up site in a gorgeous 20-acre meadow on a working farm bordered by the river Eden. There's a wealth of public footpaths to explore in the surrounding countryside, and a mere five minutes’ stroll takes you to Chiddingstone, a pretty village with one of the oldest high streets in the country – it dates back to the 16th century – where you will find a pub, village shop and tea room. Stay on site, unwind and keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife. Deer, foxes, badgers, pheasants, red kites, partridges, buzzards and many species of songbirds are regular visitors to River Field. Even otters have been reported to be seen at the river. On-site facilities include simple loos in a converted horse box. Alternatively, you can hop in the car for a day of cultural sightseeing at stately mansions and Tudor palaces within 10 minutes’ drive. You’ll also never go short of urban days out, with Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Edenbridge all within an easy 20 minutes by car. Penshurst (10 minutes’ drive) has the nearest railway line, and the site owners are happy to shuttle campers to and from the station; there’s also a bus stop about 15 minutes’ walk away.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked I stayed for one night and had a really lovely stay. The campsite is in a beautiful setting with plenty of space to relax, and it was a real treat to be able to walk to the village pub for dinner. One of the highlights was the incredible night sky, the stars were amazing once it got dark. The toilet facilities were clean and well maintained, and the whole site had a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. I'd happily stay here again and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet countryside getaway.

Local attractions

Heritage-seekers should make Chiddingstone (five minutes’ walk) their first port of call; as well as streets lined with half-timbered houses, you can tour the grounds and interior of handsome mock-gothic Chiddingstone Castle and seek out the renowned Chiding Stone, an ancient sandstone rock formation mired in mystery – it may have been a Saxon boundary stone or a Druid’s altar. Looking for more sightseeing inspo? Admire the Tudor extravagances that are moated Hever Castle and Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) and National Trust - Ightham Mote (20 minutes). You can also learn about the daily life of Winston Churchill in his study, gracious drawing room and painting studio at National Trust - Chartwell (10 minutes). Kids need a respite from cultural pursuits? Impressive Penshurst Place and Gardens (10 minutes) has a playground and woodland trail, and the British Wildlife Centre (25 minutes) offers encounters with foxes, badgers and deer. Got some adults-only time to yourself? Book a tasting session at the brewery in Chiddingstone village.
