  • Pop-up summer site 10 minutes' walk from the beach in Cowes
  • Close to bus stops and round-island cycle path for car-free outings
  • Heated covered pool, hot tub and sauna on site
Springing to life for a few weeks of summer only, Kingsclere Camping is a petite place in a handy corner of Cowes, five minutes’ drive from the town centre. As it’ll be summer while you’re staying here, surely the weather’s going to involve wall-to-wall sunshine… but just in case it isn’t, divert splashing activities from the seaside to the swimming pool on site (it’s heated and under cover, so can still be used even on occasional dreary days). And if you need a little extra warming up after days out and about, there’s also a sauna and hot tub for guest use. Speaking of days out and about, this is a useful location for all sorts of activities and attractions around the Isle of Wight – it’s a fairly compact island, so even the very far side is only just over a half-hour drive in the way. That means easy jaunts to beaches, animal parks, castles, fossil hunts, watersports, steam railway rides… All such outings are likely to result in ravenous travellers; back at base you can sort that situation as you see fit, lighting up a barbecue (off the ground only, ta) or cooking indoors at the shared kitchen. Supplies for either can be sourced at the shop a couple of minutes’ walk away, although it’s also possible that you may get sidetracked and end up in one of the couple of pubs within easy ambling distance (ah well, that’s what hols are for…).

Local attractions

Bringing bikes is a fine idea for an Isle of Wight break: there are many miles of peaceful path to pedal along around the island, and Kingsclere is only a couple of minutes from the track that goes all the way around the coastline (67 miles in total…). And bringing beach kit is also highly recommended, whether you’re planning bucket and spade outings with the tiddlers in Sandown or Shanklin (both half an hour’s drive), kayaking at Freshwater Bay (25 minutes), rockpooling at Bembridge (half an hour) or chip eating at… well, pretty much any of the beaches, really (what’s a seaside hol without fish and chips?). After that, the island’s stuffed with other family-friendly days out: historic pads Carisbrooke Castle (15 minutes) and Osborne House (20 minutes), rides on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway (20 minutes), cute creatures at Monkey Haven (15 minutes) or Amazon World Zoo (20 minutes), rollercoasters and dinosaurs at Blackgang Chine (half an hour)…
