  • Lakeside site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from central Winchester; 1.5 miles from Marwell Zoo
  • Fishing, archery, quad biking and other adventure sports
Zebras, tigers and bokibokies await in these handsome Hampshire surrounds – taking the kids to see Marwell Zoo's multitude of beasts is likely to make for some very happy hols indeed. Marwell Resort is within walking distance of this much-loved menagerie and is home to plenty of adventurous action in its own right – head here if you like the sound of oodles of outdoor activities in a pretty lakeside setting. The team at Marwell Resort have been instructing for more than 25 years, so they're well qualified to help you try out sports like archery, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting. Please note that many of these activities have a minimum age restriction applied- please check directly with the site. The site lake has a total of nine swims available for anglers (mega-sized carp can be found in its waters, including whoppers weighing up to 45 pounds). Surrounded as it is by trees, it also looks pretty fine (especially at sundown) and is a popular spot with local wildlife. Marwell Resort has strong all-round facilities, including toilets, showers and wifi. There's also an on-site bistro restaurant that serves up nourishing meals seven days a week. You can set up a barbecue and cook your own grub, too (stock up on fresh meat and veg 15 minutes' drive away at Westlands Farm Shop).

Liked Good restaurants, not expensive. Personnel are very friendly, professional and willing to assist.

Disliked Optional extras should be reassessed for payment, adventure golf and soft play should be free.
Most of the optional extras were not open this should be made clear in the advertising before booking.
Male staff cleaning ladies toilets /showers without calling out before entering to ensure users are in a decent state of dress.
Lake fishing details should be redressed as it is not up to date. Lake might have held large carp but it is not likely that it still does. Lake is not well maintained, dead ducks, old fishing line, empty cans, bottles and rubbish in swims and lake.
Pitched needs attention, not flat and sparse grass. P

Liked There was a good choice of Outdoor activities, walks and play areas for the kids.
The Pizza night was amazing.

Disliked The water pressure of the showers was not very good. They would also go from a warm temperature to very hot. Luckily it was my older child that was in the shower and not my youngest.

Liked We had a fantastic time at Marwell resort and everyone loved the activities and a big part of that was due to our instructor, Dale. He was incredibly helpful and patient with everyone, making the experience enjoyable and easy to follow. His genuine and hands-on approach stood out, especially compared to some of the other staff who seemed to be just reading from a script.
The food at the restaurant was delicious and well-prepared. Ed at the bar also deserves a shout-out; he was excellent, providing quick and friendly service.

Disliked The campsite itself was very tidy and well-maintained. The only downside was the toilet facilities, which were only cleaned three times a day. While they were clean, more frequent attention would have made a difference given the number of people using them. The sinks and shower facilities could also do with an update

Liked Very warm friendly welcome. Great amount of activities available, very child friendly. Also just really easy and simple to book and get to.

Disliked Our campsite was a little messy on arrival, just quite a bit of rubbish and about 10 tent pegs that were tricky to remove and my little ones kept tripping over. The only other thing I would have liked is somewhere to be able to have a swim on site to cool off in the extreme heat we had.

Liked Amazing site, super friendly staff. Pitch was lovely. We went electric pitch. Lots of greenery everywhere with amazing walks and my son and husband loved the fishing lake. Shower block and toilets great. Shop on site open early for a morning coffee. Bar and bistro was lovely, great food and entertainment on a Wednesday night was brilliant. Will definitely be coming back. Kids enjoyed the quad biking and marwell zoo is just around the corner.

Disliked Nothing major just the activities on site where quiet expensive.

Liked This is a great site, great staff, excellent amenities, bar, pizza etc although the showers are a bit hit and miss and could do with a plumber to sort out the water pressure and temperature, still usable.
The activities, we had 2 hours axe throwing with an excellent instructor, great for all ages and worth the money, but book early as these book out.
We had 2 pitches for our large family, BBQ every night and fire pit, hired from the site, really enjoyed the stay.

Disliked Our field has deep ruts which will eventually damage a small car, and after dark easy to fall over if your not careful. Not strictly a dislike but something the site needs to sort out.

Local attractions

Marwell Zoo (five minutes' drive) has over 140 different species to admire – you can also leave the car back at base and stroll over (about 20 minutes) for a pedestrian safari. Paultons Park (25 minutes' drive) is another perennial fave for family-oriented days out – here you can meet Peppa Pig, crash down log flumes or opt for wanders through a dinosaur-filled forest. The South Downs National Park has some truly splendid hiking trails, including the 100-mile-long South Downs Way (the trail starts 15 minutes down the road in Winchester). Mountain bikers also have plenty to choose from around these parts – an exhilarating bike track through the woods is on hand in the nearby village of Bishopstoke (10 minutes). The gorgeous New Forest National Park (25 minutes) is also within easy reach, and one of the best ways to get around is by open-top tour bus. There are three routes to choose from – it all comes down to whether you prefer vistas of heather-covered heathland or coastal explores. Speaking of the sea, beaches like Lepe and Highcliffe Castle (both 40 minutes) are very much worth the journey (make sure to pack jelly shoes and a towel if at all tempted).
