  • Peaceful site surrounded by lakes, on the edge of the New Forest
  • Bookable activities including high ropes, climbing and abseiling
  • Play area, table tennis, café and shop; toilet blocks with hot showers
Set up camp for a night or several at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre and Campsite set in 65 acres in the New Forest, for guaranteed busy days among a wide range of forest adventures. Among the outdoor adventures and field study activities here (which must be booked in advance and are subject to availability), you can try high and low ropes, climbing and abseiling, archery, zipwire and heaps more under the eyes of its experienced instructors – or take yourself off under your own guidance for orienteering, treasure hunting, mountain biking and fishing in its lush surrounding lakes.... Happily, a café serving the likes of jacket potatoes, paninis etc is here too so that adventurers don't have far to forage when it comes to light bites, and if you need a day off from all the action the site also has a play area and free wifi. (Table tennis and kid-sized bouldering walls are around too if you really can't help yourself...) The several amenities blocks are well equipped with a toilet block with hot showers, a baby-changing room and washing-up facilities. A small shop is to hand for basic supplies, but both Bransgore and Burley are only two miles away if you need anything else – maybe see how fast you can run there and back...?

Primitive grass campsite (no pets, lake view)

Liked This was our 4th stay at Avon Tyrrell, the site is great, beautiful forests and walks around the site. The activities for the kids are top notch. The site has a really lovely chilled and nice vibe with other families being friendly and nice to be around. The team there are great this year they helped me with a top box emergency.

We brought my sister and brother in law with their 2.5 year old this was the brother in laws first camping experience, and he loved it. It is a great site for the first time camper, facility’s are good and atmospheres are chilled.

Primitive grass campsite (no pets, lake view)

Liked We've been coming here for years. The site is beautiful, the lake is stunning and they do a really good job with keeping the grounds looking nice. The location is perfect. There's so much for the kids to do even as they've got older, and it feels very safe so we don't worry if we haven't seen them in a while! The showers were fine, water is warm and there seems to be someone cleaning very regularly and often, but as with all places where there are lots of people it gets dirty between cleans. Still very clean considering! The pitch we stayed on was on a slope so difficult to pitch but we managed sleeping on the down slope ok as it was only 2 nights, and the size of the pitches are great with the picnic benches. We were told that it was 11am checkout whereas I thought it was 10 so maybe that's changed. We've not used the WiFi or café so can't comment on that, but the café is only open for the main holidays I think, great if you don't fancy cooking or for coffee in the morning.
Bear in mind the airplanes go over often... I always forget and each time I cringe but they stop after 11pm ISH. This stay we were treated with a fly over from the red arrows so there's always a plus!

Disliked I think it's such a shame the big firepit is only available for private bookings.. has this changed? As in the past there was a big fire going and everyone seemed to be down there and we cooked our marshmallows and chatted with fellow campers which was really nice... This last stay there was no-one using it for the whole time which is such a shame.. I really think this is a massive mistake and a money grab tbh. There should be communal firepits for those of us that can't bring them!

Also, we didn't expect the weather to be so hot and would've loved to go on the lake but there was no availability online for kayaking or anything on the lake... This also seems a shame as if people are there and there's staff there, you should be able to book something on the day as it seemed really quiet and this would be a better way of making more money than charging to use the firepit....

Powered grass campsite (no pets, lake view)

Liked This campsite is the best we’ve ever stayed at! Allocated pitches means you all get the same amount of space which was plenty for a large tent, a car and space in front to eat and play. The staff were fantastic from the reception point of checking in, the cafe and all the activities! They were friendly, helpful and really nice. The campsite itself had great toilet and showering facilities that were close by to the pitches in various places as well as multiple playgrounds. There was ample space to play sports in various grassy patches and it has a cafe and a shop for all your needs. We did a few walks around the campsite as well, around the lakes and through the forest and spotted toads, fish and even a kingfisher!
We also took part in the tree top trail and high ropes with our 9 and 6 year olds who absolutely loved it and the staff were experienced and kind and put our minds at ease ( I’m not great with heights but still climbed half way up a tall tree!)
The location in The New Forest itself is also amazing! So near to all different little villages and walks with so many ponies to spot too. We walked through Burley with its witch and fairy shops and were close to Ringwood and Brockenhurst with the lovely stream too! Such an amazing little 3 night get away we will all remember dearly!

Disliked My only dislike was that it was under a flight path to Bournemouth airport so from later in the evening there were loud planes taking off and landing at various intervals. My husband loved spotting them all and there weren’t too many as it’s not that busy an airport but in such a peaceful setting it was a bit of a put off however we will definitely be coming back here again!

Powered grass campsite (no pets, lake view)

Liked When we arrived we were made to feel very welcome by the reception staff.
We were allocated a space near the lake, which is a lovely spot. Clean and decent toilets/showers (the showers could do with some shelves to put your soap/shampoo down).
There are beautiful paths through the surrounding Forrest, which is lovely to walk around.
We knew we were under a flight path but this wasn't a problem as there were not that many planes plus it was exciting to see the planes come over quite close. Nice little cafe and shop with very friendly staff.
Unfortunately our daughter is too young to participate in the outdoors activities, but they looked amazing and we aim to come back when she is old enough so that we can do these activities.

Disliked There was no swimming pool, which we felt was missing on this site. There are also no washing facilities which deemed quite tricky to get things clean and dry when our daughter soiled herself during the night.
The play parks were good and my daughter loved playing in them, but I thought they could do with tidying up a bit (remove weeds/brambles etc).

Powered grass campsite (no pets, lake view)

Liked The area in general, the nature, showers and toilets provided, beautiful views all around, bicycle routes for everyone done very well, lake was only seconds to walk in distance.

Disliked That we were not allowed to have a swim in the lake, that was the main reason we booked the stay so we could refresh in the lake on such a hot day. It's our fault that we haven't read the rules of the camp probably, but regardless, if you have a lake, make it accessible for the customers to enjoy it without the need to book the instructor and a paddle board.

Local attractions

Several bike tracks start directly from the site, so pack a picnic and head off into the New Forest to find your own adventure – perhaps you might fancy a pedal to the Dorset and Hampshire beaches of Christchurch, Mideford, Southbourne or Highcliffe...? The sands of Bournemouth are about 10 miles away. Around the New Forest, the many places to see include the New Forest Wildlife Park in Southampton, an ancient natural woodland and wildlife haven (look out for otters and owls); the award-winning National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, and Liberty's Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre at Ringwood. Pipsqeaks have the home of Peppa Pig World at Paultons Family Theme Park 30 minutes away for actively exciting day out, as well as the hands-on activities and indoor and outdoor play areas of Longdown Dairy Farm in Southampton and the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester. Naturally, they might like trekking with a New Forest pony too.
