  • Rural location on the edge of a village within easy reach of London
  • A 10-minute drive to Maldon; 15 minutes to RHS Garden Hyde Hall
  • Wine tasting 200 metres away and a historic pub 10 minutes' walk away
Escaping to the Essex countryside means different things to different people. For some folk it’s a chance to take it easy – visiting gardens, taking gentle strolls to the local pub and seeking out cute little tea rooms – while for others it’s all about packing days full of activities like wild swimming, canoeing and long bike rides. One thing that surely links together all guests at Novoli Farm, though, is time spent in the gorgeous Essex countryside looking out over the lovely vineyard views and Blackwater estuary (from the top of the hill). Feel free to also pop down to New Hall Vineyards, 200 metres away, for a tasting should you wish to experience the vines more closely. Prefer a pint of beer? No problem – this site is on the edge of the village of Purleigh, about 10 minutes’ walk from the village pub (and the shop, where you can pick up supplies for your picnics and barbecue evenings). There’s also a bus stop in the village for services to the riverside town of Maldon, and the site is just next to the 45-mile St Peter’s Way footpath – so you’ll have options for getting around if you don’t fancy driving. This peaceful spot is an adults-only setup, but dogs are permitted. Things have been kept fairly simple on the grass pitches, but guests do have access to basic, mains-connected toilet facilities and mains water (please note that there are no showers, however).

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Small, peaceful 'rustic' site in a quiet corner of a quintessential English village, with a church on the hill and a lovely Pub. Among rolling countryside but still close to 'civilisation.'
No frills, but there's a decent loo, wash up and disposal area.
EHU on our pitch which was huge.

Disliked Despite a huge pitch, levelling our M/Home wasn't 100% possible, even with chocks we were still out. Given we were only there two nights not a major issue. Irritating at best.
The grass could do with a cut, given the un-evenness there were a couple of trip hazards, but again, a niggle.
There IS something that hums at night - it's the water pipes which I think feed nearby horse troughs ! A minor observation.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Novoli farm has a very relaxed atmosphere and plenty of space. Facilities are limited but very clean. Easy electric hook up with 16 amp supply. No check in but locked gate protects the site and access code sent in plenty of time. Good information given by owner re things to do and places to eat in the vicinity.

Disliked Only one ( but very clean) toilet. With a bit of a queue in the morning one extra would be beneficial

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked It was a friendly site and we were welcomed with many useful information instructions emails and messages.
Light in the toilet, which was so good and bins were emptied, everything was clean

Disliked Toilet seat was loose and I had to keep putting it back in place.
There was a humming noise close by all night which I must confess disturbed my sleep, don’t know if this was a one off but it was not from the campsite

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Very small, quiet site. Clean toilet, washing up area, rubbish disposal. Good communication from owner. Very peaceful. Lovely village a short walk away. Nice views. We had the small back field to ourselves and a flat pitch, although some are sloped. We live fairly close and stopped over for a night to test some additions to our camper but this would be a great base for exploring the area. We'd be very tempted to visit again just for a peaceful day or two!

Disliked Not a dislike, more a heads up. The gate in to the back field in is on a bend and was a tight fit for our camper (mk7 Transit minibus conversion) I think a much wider or longer unit would struggle. The front field was easy access.

Local attractions

The maritime town of Maldon (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start your tour of the area – perhaps with a stroll along Hythe Quay to see one of the UK’s largest collections of London barges. You can also launch canoes or hire bikes here, or join boat trips out onto the Blackwater Estuary. Just outside the town, the Museum of Power is worth a visit to see the miniature railway and working steam pump. For more watery activities, head to Hoe Mill lock (10 minutes), a well-known local wild swimming spot, or the historic harbour at Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes). The Dengie National Nature Reserve (half an hour) is a good place to be if you’re into your birdwatching. Gardens more your thing? RHS Garden Hyde Hall (15 minutes) is the big draw nearby, with several themed areas keeping things interesting all year round. The three acres at Beeleigh Abbey Gardens (10 minutes) are also worth exploring, or you can try the trails of Danbury Country Park (also 10 minutes) if you’d like to see something wilder.
