  • Small family-run site with Ribble Valley views in Lancashire
  • A 20-minute drive to Gisburn Forest bike paths, Pendle Hill and Settle
  • Dog-friendly site with dedicated exercise area; pub 15 minutes’ walk
Keen to have a look at Lancashire and a sneaky peek into Yorkshire? Lurk for a while at Calder Farm for a peaceful break with views to Pendle Hill in the spectacular Ribble Valley. This is a scenic pitstop for exploring the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes’ drive) or hopping counties into the Yorkshire Dales National Park (20 minutes). Sparkling clean facilities on this family-run site include a heated toilet block with disabled access to the showers and washing-up area. Barbecues are permitted (but not open campfires please), and you’ll need to bring your own firepit, although you can buy wood on site and picnic tables are provided on the tree-sheltered field. Stock up on barbecue supplies in the supermarkets of Clitheroe (15 minutes’ drive), and if you’re just not that into cooking on your Lancashire camping break, there’s a gastro-pub and microbrewery in the pretty village of Bolton by Bowland (15 minutes’ walk). Your family dogs are welcome to join you on the many footpaths direct from the site, and there’s also a dedicated dog-exercise area in a fenced field – the owners do ask, however, that dogs remain on a lead while around the site. And talking of animals, you’ll soon be firm friends with the horses and ponies grazing neighbouring fields.

Liked: Location, pitch size, decent facility block.

Disliked: No arrival info, had to go and find the owner at their house to find out where to pitch.

Issues with other guests - one family had spread themselves out over the top corner near the facilities block and were just letting their kids run riot all over everyone’s pitches. They had parked their car in the arrivals spot obstructing new arrivals rather than in their pitch. We had to shut ourselves in our motorhome in the end to stop their young son coming over and trying to get in our motorhome. It was so intrusive and rude. Then another family arrived and pitched next to us and commenced to behave the same way, kids playing football in amongst ours and other people’s caravans, parents doing nothing to stop them. This and kids shouting at each other, and then parents next door shouting at kids went on until about 10pm.
Arguably not the site owners fault of course but there was no presence from them or any kind of deterrent for this behaviour, it was like these two families owned the place and there was nothing in place to stop their ignorant behaviour.
Basically a nicely laid out site but with very much a ‘help yourself and get on with it’ feel with no interaction whatsoever from the owners.
Might be ok if that sort of thing doesn’t bother you and if the other holiday makers are respectful but if you catch it unlucky like we did it’s not good. We found the whole experience invasive and stressful when all we wanted was a relaxing break after a four hour drive.

From the manager: Hello. I am sorry to hear of the problems you had. We were around on the site a lot in the morning and evenings but are out on the the farm during the day aswell. We did speak to the people as regards the children once we were aware of the issue and have since put up some extra signage to assist people when they arrive, keeping noise so it is unobtrusive and not to play around the caravans.
When booking direct with ourselves we always make sure people know where they are to pitch but apparently it isn't possible to do this through the pitchup system. As soon as we know someone has an issue we will sort it out straight away. Please accept our apologies - this isn't the normal experience for people staying here.
