  • Dog-friendly site on the Lancashire moors
  • Half an hour's drive from Pendle Hill and Manchester
  • Shops, pubs and takeaways within five minutes' drive
Up for moorland walks, lake fishing and nature trails? Or more inclined towards grand country houses and city museums? Put your dilemmas aside and sign up for a spell at The Paddock, where all such pastimes are possible. This small and friendly Lancashire site is surrounded by walking and biking paths across the moorlands, as well as being a five-minute drive from the shops, pubs, takeaways and cafés of the village of Ramsbottom. When you’ve returned from days in the hills, canal cruises or city sightseeing, there’s nothing like a campfire to toast your toes around or a barbecue for some outdoor banqueting, and both are permitted here (provided the ground is not disturbed). Dogs are welcome on site too. Footpaths across the wild moors are easily accessible from the site, but if you’re seeking a gentler introduction to the Lancashire countryside, take a 15-minute trip to Jumbles Country Park. Constructed around a reservoir in the Bradshaw Valley, this wooded area is a haven for jays, herons and kestrels, and the walking trails end, conveniently enough, at a café with cake. If you like to do more than walking by the waters, there’s coarse fishing at Jumbles reservoir, and further tench, roach and carp to be caught 40 minutes away at Hollingworth Lake, along with canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing.

Local attractions

If you’re a fan of pedal-powered explorations, pay a call to Lee Quarry Mountain Bike Trail (20 minutes’ drive) or get over to Gisburn Forest (50 minutes) for bike hire and tracks of all types through the Trough of Bowland. Like hikes with history? Starting 25 minutes away in Barrowford, the Pendle Way is a 45-mile circuit passing through, round and up some of Lancashire’s finest terrain, taking in sites from the 17th-century witch trials. Routes up Pendle Hill start from Barley, half an hour away, and end, on fine days, with views right over to the Irish Sea. For history of an urban and industrial kind, you can't beat Manchester, also half an hour away. Mix visits to the Museum of Science and Industry and the People’s History Museum with tours of the Coronation Street cobbles at ITV Studios and boat cruises down the Irwell river. Elizabethan Gawthorpe Hall (20 minutes) has an impressive exterior and elegant insides, topped off with a fine collection of textiles and embroidery. While you're time travelling, don’t forget Bremetennacum, or Ribchester as it became known after the Romans left: 40 minutes away, it’s a pleasant hilltop town with old Roman baths and a museum full of artefacts left by the former Imperial occupiers.
