  • Family-run site in the grounds of an 18th-century farm
  • Easily accessible from central Burnley and the M65
  • On-site café selling breakfasts, light lunches and sweet treats
Come and meet rescue animals and have a ride on a Shetland pony at Smithson Farm Camping and Caravan Park – and there aren't many sites that have an on-site museum too… Boxes of all sorts are ticked at this family-owned Lancashire longhouse farm in the hamlet of Reedley Hallows: it's in a peaceful wildlife haven where regular visitors include bats, rabbits, buzzards and kestrels; you can buy farm eggs and homemade jams and chutneys in the site shop, and you'll get a top welcome from amiable owners Carol and Harry. No need to spend hours getting out and about either, as the M65 passes close to the farm and central Burnley is a couple of miles away (reached in a mighty scenic way indeed along the nearby towpath of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal). Eats of all sorts are sorted on site as well: Smithson's Farm sells a range of light lunches, homemade cakes and cream teas, and guests can order full English breakfasts to be served in the farmhouse the next morning. Once you've arrived and been fed and watered, wander over to the aforementioned museum, the Woodend Mining Museum, or take a bike ride of five and a half miles to reach the National Trust's Gawthorpe Hall. Thompson Park, with boating lake and Italian gardens, is an easy two miles away.

Route directions

Once on Woodend Road, you'll go under a motorway bridge after about a quarter of a mile. Carry on and take the 3RD turning on the right which is well signposted for 'Smithson Farm Camping and Caravan Site, on a with large sign on legs at the bottom of the lane. Do NOT turn up the first or second right under the bridge as you will not be able to turn your vehicle around and you will also upset the site's neighbours.

Local attractions

Ditch the car if you so desire while here and set off out by foot or bike; a good clutch of attractions and activities are within a few miles. If the Smithson Farm museum has whetted your appetite for local history, take the three-mile journey to the Weavers' Triangle, an industrial part of Burnley with 19th-century buildings and mills around the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Set off on hikes along the Burnley Way from the Weavers' Triangle Visitor Centre, a 40-mile circular path around the canal towpaths and the surrounding moorland. Access another top local hike at Pendle, four and a half miles away: the Pendle Witch Trail to Lancaster Castle where the Pendle witches were imprisoned before the famed trials. The 45 miles of the Pendle Way are within easy reach too: start off from Reedley, under a mile away, to take Section 6 of the trail through ancient hunting forest around Reedley, Higham and Newchurch, then follow Section 7 from Newchurch for the spectacular views of Pendle Hill. The stately home and 400-acre parkland of 14th-century Towneley Hall, four miles away, make another splendid option for a local day out: if the kids are underwhelmed by the paintings and sculptures, they'll surely like the hall's Egyptian mummy and the wildlife-themed interactive play.
