Need something to finally fix that writer's block? Seeking solace in the splendid south Lakes? Then pack a pen, plenty of pads and perhaps some reading material and make for The Writer's Retreat, a secluded six-acre site in a private Duddon Valley woodland. As well as bookish and other artsy types, this place is great for families and couples looking for peace, quiet and pretty panoramas, of which there are many hereabouts – The Writer's Retreat is a few minutes' drive from the coast and half an hour from Coniston Water. Set at the end of a narrow country lane, the site has a small number of wild-style pitches among the trees – self-sufficient travellers will do well here. If you need a bit of contact with the outside world, the Lakeland market town of Broughton-in-Furness and its handful of pubs and shops is a 10-minute drive away. It's also a half-hour walk from Green Road railway station – handy if you want to dispense with the car for your trip or fancy a drive-free jaunt elsewhere along the Cumbrian coast. The Writer's Retreat is also a five-minute drive from Millom, where there's a supermarket and petrol station.
