General

  • Small and secluded site on the southern edge of the Lake District
  • Broughton-in-Furness a 10-minute drive away; Coniston Water 30 minutes
  • Six acres of private land with direct access to forest walks

Need something to finally fix that writer's block? Seeking solace in the splendid south Lakes? Then pack a pen, plenty of pads and perhaps some reading material and make for The Writer's Retreat, a secluded six-acre site in a private Duddon Valley woodland.

As well as bookish and other artsy types, this place is great for families and couples looking for peace, quiet and pretty panoramas, of which there are many hereabouts – The Writer's Retreat is a few minutes' drive from the coast and half an hour from Coniston Water.

Set at the end of a narrow country lane, the site has a small number of wild-style pitches among the trees – self-sufficient travellers will do well here. If you need a bit of contact with the outside world, the Lakeland market town of Broughton-in-Furness and its handful of pubs and shops is a 10-minute drive away. It's also a half-hour walk from Green Road railway station – handy if you want to dispense with the car for your trip or fancy a drive-free jaunt elsewhere along the Cumbrian coast.

The Writer's Retreat is also a five-minute drive from Millom, where there's a supermarket and petrol station.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Units longer than 6 metres are not allowed.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Everything the site, the views, the facilities and the owners! A solo adventure - nothing was too much for lee and owners- even a roadside rescue after breaking down 10 mins away from the site. Couldn’t have felt more welcomed and looked after - will definitely be back to enjoy fully!

quiet site, pitches with great views. Lee, the owner, is a very friendly and helpful guy, making a lovely cup of coffee when we arrived, offering advice on where to visit and even towing my van out when I got it stuck was no problem to him. Had a great time and will certainly be back next spring.

Views, hosts, location, warm welcome, clean facilities, lovely warm shower (take flip flops as it's a concrete floor), great walks just off the campsite, close to the lakes, peaceful, decent phone signal if you need it, lovely village nearby. We stayed on one of the wettest/ windiest nights of the year but still had an amazing time. Couldn't fault anything- defo book with lee and Donna, would fully recommend.

Had an amazing weekend at The Writers Retreat! The views were spectacular even from right outside our tent! Lee (the owner) found the perfect balance of leaving us to our own devices, but also helping us with absolutely anything we needed. The site has lovely secluded pitches surrounded by nature. With nice woodland walks close by.

If you are a fan of wild camping but also want the convenience of a site this is the place for you! Lee made us feel right at home right from the get go and even shared a beer with us from his home bar! 🍻
    We will deffinetly be returning.
