Lowther holiday park
Lowther castle

  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • Bar and shop; fly fishing available in the river Lowther
Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away. Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site. Those of you who prefer a picnic lunch will be pleased to know that Lowther Holiday Park has a fully-stocked mini market, which also supplies essential camping equipment and gas. There’s a family-run bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer and Sky Sports for those who can’t bear to miss a match day. Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so wade around the shallows and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds. You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

What customers say

Beautiful, well-kept woodland site with river access, ideal for walks and cycling. Guests loved the clean facilities, friendly staff, and on-site pub/bakery. Lowther Castle nearby was a hit. Some noted uneven/tight pitches, minor noise/cleanliness issues. Highly recommended for families and nature enthusiasts.

Powered grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Area is central for going to Penrith and ullswater good walks for dogs from the site to the castle and river walks

Disliked When we arrived on the Sunday the male toilets were smelly and the female toilets were dirty and smelly and were not cleaned until the Wednesday when I could not stand them anymore and went to complain (nicely) I had taken photos of rubbish on a sink which had been there since I arrived I also complained about the recycling buckets which were so full I couldn’t get my rubbish in them (photos also taken)however in fairness the toilets were cleaned every day afterwards and the buckets were emptied and remained satisfactory thereafter
I did also feel the pitches were very close to each other which was okay during the week but it felt a bit crowded by Friday and the weekend .i don’t think I will be back to this site but it wasn’t terrible and my family had a good holiday

Liked Lovely ply area for children of all ages and it was a safe space for kids to roam.

Disliked Some kids were allowed to stay up late and were disruptive to the younger ones sleep. Not the campsites fault.

Liked The park is in a beautiful setting with a great playground situated right next to the camping field. We were met with a very friendly greeting and access through the barriers was easy with a barrier code given. The tent pitches were a great size. We added on a small fee for a gazebo/shelter as we were meeting up with friends. This was also handled with ease and definitely worth doing as the weather was hit and miss! Everyone was really friendly and it was the perfect place for a 9 year old to run free.

Disliked The toilets/showers and washing up facilities are further away than you would normally expect for campers which is a bit tricky, especially with a young child.

Liked Lowther Castle is a lovely walk away.
The playpark would have been fabulous if the weather had been good,

Disliked Very disappointing! given our pitch and just shown on a map. When we got to the pitch the caravan next door had an awning attached and the car parked on our pitch/grass so we had no option but to drive forward onto the pitch. You then could not even open the motorhome canopy if you wanted to as there was a tree next to it.
Young children running wild with no one watching them - noise well into late night was not what we had expected at this site. The lady on reception on departure didnt give a damn really.
So pitch for us was grossly overpriced - advertised with picnic table there was not one - we couldnt even connect up to the right electric point we had to trail the wire across and round the van. Feel completely mis sold by pitch up!!

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go. Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history. As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.
