Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful scenery, great clean facilities. Showers are great, warm and spacious though a slight walk from the campsite.

Disliked: No hot water available at washing up point (June 24). The seating area shown in images is only available for guests at the cafe nearby and this is closed on Wednesdays & Thursdays.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: its a great spot. cosy-intimate campsite.

Disliked: No hot water, mirror in toilet block is so low to the ground that you have to kneel on the floor or do the splits. Promised Saturday Pizzas not always available (dependant on staff availability).

From the manager: Hi Simon, We're glad you enjoyed our campsite location. Unfortunately I did have to cancel pizzas this Saturday night, as my back went on Thursday night to the point I was laid on the floor for 24 hours until it eased and I could get to my chiropractor. This is, I hope, not a regular thing, and I can only apogise I was unable to do pizzas, and it is not possible with one member of staff, you need 2. I can assure you I'd have rather have been making pizzas than in agony on the floor! Thank you for your understanding on this.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The campsite was really close to the start of the route we took to reach scafell pike. The Yewtree pub was really good and close to the accommodation. The showers were nice and hot !

Disliked: As the campsite is next to a river we weren’t prepared for the midges, but that’s fault of our own for not being prepared enough.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Campsite located in the most beautiful spot with so many wonderful walking routes close by. Small site and pitches well laid out with plenty of space. A truly ‘off grid’ holiday without any phone signal or wifi. Basic facilities on site but very clean and well maintained daily. Daniel was very friendly and keen to offer any help if required. Will definitely book to stay again!

Disliked: I wasn’t able to stay longer!!

Local attractions

Dust off those hiking boots, for Seatoller’s surrounds are stacked with walking trails to suit all comers, from those seeking a gentle stroll through woodland and across heather-strewn fells to those in search of more vertical challenges. The beginning of a couple of the national park’s top climbs are easy to get to too – Great Gable (an hour and a half) and mighty Scafell (a couple of hours). Roam a little further afield for hikes on Catbells (15 minutes’ drive), around the Castlerigg stone circle (25 minutes) or on the slopes of Helvellyn (half an hour away, and a fine choice for mountain bikers too). If you’d like to have a crack at climbing in a controlled environment, try the via ferrata route at Honister Slate Mine, five minutes away, and worth a stop for an underground mine tour even if you’re not up to clinging on to crags. All sound a little tiring? Less demanding days out include the Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour) and the sculpture trail at Rydal Hall Gardens (40 minutes). It’s worth knocking around Keswick for a bit too, visiting the eccentric Puzzling Place exhibition and Derwent Pencil Museum or taking tipples at the town’s brewery. Alpaca trekking at Lingholm Estate and Whinlatter Forest are some other splendid days out.
