Views around the site

  • Lake District wild-camping site 10 minutes’ drive from Kendal
  • Windermere 15 minutes’ drive; Scafell Pike 50 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; resident sheep and cows; five minutes’ walk from a pub
It’s not quite ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ at Peacock Farm Camping, but it’s worth noting that this family-friendly site is open to the public only for 60 precious days a year, so it pays to time your holiday just right… This is a pop-up site on a working farm on the south-eastern fringes of Lake District National Park, almost halfway between Kendal (10 minutes’ drive) and Windermere (15 minutes) – a pretty privileged location for exploring this spectacular corner of England, with views of distant wooded hills and fields surrounded by moss-covered stone walls. Amenities are on the simple side at Peacock Farm, but there are portable toilets for guests. In addition, you’re welcome to light up a barbecue or a campfire when it’s time for dinner. Need provisions? The nearest shop is just across the A591 (five minutes), or you can head into Kendal or Staveley (10 minutes). And if you fancy a pub meal (steak, fish and chips, curry…), you have to walk only about five minutes down the lane. There are dog-friendly walks in the vicinity, but while on the farm, please keep your canine buddy on a lead so as not to spook the resident animals, which include sheep and cows. There is also plenty of wildlife to be seen on your hikes – from red squirrels to nesting ospreys at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where the peaty ponds also attract dragonflies and damselflies.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Firstly, we wanted a real “back to basics” experience and that’s exactly what Peacock Farm offers. We read the advert and understood there was no water or shower facilities, absolutely fine, we were exploring the Lake District and showered at service stations. We brought with us a 5ltr water bottle and refilled whilst we were out. We used this for cooking and washing.
The camp was almost empty, us and maybe 3 other set ups around the large camp. It was perfect for us! Lots of space, good ground for pitching the tent. Stunning views if you pitch higher in the field.
There were 2 toilets that were cleaned twice during our stay.
There is no reception on site, you just turn up and pitch up. The shepherd was a lovely man who made us feel very welcome when he visited the field to tend to the animals. It was lovely to hear all their plans for the year to expand.
They are working very hard to provide a great space for more experienced campers. Very nice man.
There are horses, sheep and lambs in the field next to you, which obviously make some noise but it was minimal. If you enjoy the sound of silence, it’s for you, we realised there was not a sound to be heard at all! Being from the city, we have never experienced that! Bliss!
The shepherd told us about honey bees that were in the field below (which we didn’t have time to see).
We enjoyed a bbq and campfire each night. There are 2 pubs within walking distance. There is a Caravan Club site along the same road. The road to the site itself is a bumpy, gravelly one, good for our KIA sportage.
We used our data on phones and didn’t even think about WiFi.
Great location, we visited so many places (Windermere, Ambleside, Ullswater, Grasmere, Kendall and Penrith) with this a very central location for us to return to every evening.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and had planned to stay for 2 nights then move on. But we cancelled our other plans and extended the stay as we liked it so much. Thank you so much to the owners. We will definitely be back next year and we look forward to seeing the progress.

Disliked We didn’t dislike anything but it’s worth pointing out camping is what you make it. We have a good set up, happy to “rough” it and find workarounds with regard to water and washing. Others may struggle with this site if you are new to camping, expecting shower blocks, washing areas for plates and crockery for example. I wouldn’t recommend for children or “glampers”.

We will be back next year regardless!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We were looking for somewhere peaceful, where we weren’t crammed in next to other tents. Peacock Farm was perfect. It was super quiet, with some sheep, lambs and ponies for neighbours.
Beautiful views in every direction.
Loved the rainbow sheep as well.
We had a lovely stay.

Disliked Not a dislike as such, but a water tap would have been really helpful, to refill water bottles.
