Campsite

  • Off-grid site in the foothills of the Eskdale and Wasdale valley
  • A 10 minute-drive to Wast Water and Scafell Pike; more fells nearby
  • Fishing tarn on site and private river fishing a short walk away
Eyeing up Cumbrian fells and mountains? Based on a working family farm in the Cumbrian countryside, Bridge End Camping is at the gateway to the western Lake District fells. Just 100 yards from the river Irt too, take yourself on a morning swim or spend the early sunlight hours fishing. England’s deepest lake, Wast Water, is just 10 minutes’ drive away for more water activities. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, Scafell Pike is within walking distance of the top of the lake, along with other sublime Wasdale and Eskdale mountains. Since Bridge Edge Camping is at the base of Irton Pike, there are more Lake District mountains a 20-minute walk from the site (and, of course, some simply stunning views from your base). When the sun dips behind the horizon, bring out your snacks and set up around one of the firepits available for hire on site. Wood can be purchased on site, so you won’t need to go running around the local towns trying to source your own. There's no electricity on site, but handy site features include showers, toilets and washing-up facilities. If you want an ice pack frozen, just ask the site. Fishing is available either on the private river stretch a short walk away or at the on-site fishing tarn. Treat yourself (you are on holiday, after all). The site can arrange for afternoon tea to be delivered to your pitch. Those drooling at the thought of freshly-barbecued skewers can request a barbecue pack packed with meat and fresh eggs straight from the local farm too. If you’re lucky, you may get to meet some of the farm’s residents. The friendly sheep always welcome a good cuddle. If you fancy a pub crawl or some other tasty nosh, Eskdale (20 minutes’ drive) has a fine pub selection and the village of Gosforth (10 minutes) has pubs, an Italian restaurant, a café and a village shop. There’s ice cream at Seascale beach (15 minutes) too, of course. No need to start your engine if you don’t want to – there’s another pub five minutes’ walk from the site and a tearoom and gift shop in the nearby woodlands, 10 minutes’ walk away.

What customers say

Fantastic location near Wast Water & Scafell Pike. Hosts Nicky & Jason are super friendly. Immaculate facilities. Comfortable bell tents. Minor fly/bog issues noted, but guests loved it and want to return.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The wonderfully welcoming hosts, that the site was well located (pub a short stroll away, nice café and deli on the way to the lake), and that the showers, toilets and kitchen surpassed my expectations for the price. Also liked that I could have my car at my pitch as I was in a one man tent!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Me, my partner and dog had a lovely stay, the showers are large with warm water, clean and well stocked toilets, and a washing up shed, also very well stocked!
Was really close (about 10 minute drive) to Wastwater that is beautiful to swim in, or just relax next to, enjoyed a swim in the emerald pool close by too! And sunset on Seascale beach and the mountain that is walking distance from camp (about a 40 minute hike).

Really nice grounds with drinking water on site and a little stream to get access too for our dog.

Had so much help from the host with freezing our ice packs, and just general help with anything we needed, we will definitely be happy to stay again!

Disliked Nothing!

Bell tent (five person)

Liked Everything! Nikki is a fantastic host who made us feel very welcome and helped with anything we needed. We stayed in a 5 person bell tent, it was clean cosy spacious, it had a gas stove so we could make a brew on arrival, equipped with skillet pans so you can cook on the fire pit and had plates/cups/bowls/cutlery/tin opener and scissors and even marshmallows!!! Shared facilities were always clean and stocked with toilet roll/hand-wash. There is a lovely pub just down the road next to the river from the campsite. We visited St Bees beach while staying and that is worth a visit as well as the railway at Ravenglass. We also took a trip up to Wasdale Emerald pools and the views are breathtaking as well as having a dip to cool off. We took some beautiful pictures while up there. We will definitely be returning and I will recommend this campsite to family and friends! Thanks Nikki and family for a
Fantastic stay!! Heather, Damon and Georgia

Liked A brilliant site. Made to feel very welcome as soon as you arrive.

You are out in the sticks but very close to Wasdale so if you’re going for Wainwright’s this site is definitely for you!

Only an hour to Keswick as well.

Will definitely be coming back!

Local attractions

Cumbria’s gorgeous walks aside, Bridge End Camping is well-situated for a historical adventure too. Muncaster Castle (15 minutes’ drive) is a riverside castle with hawk and owl flying displays. Known by locals as ‘La’al Ratty’, The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Co.Ltd (10 minutes) revives the time of steam trains. So, take a journey by steam through the Lake District hills. Perhaps you’re in the mood for some more outdoor activities. If so, West Lakes Adventure (15 minutes) runs canoeing, kayaking, scrambling, canyoning and abseiling. If you’d rather sort your own, there’s a bicycle, paddleboard and kayak hire in Gosforth (five minutes).
