  • Secluded and peaceful base from which to explore the western lakes
  • Hot showers and hairdryers available on site
  • Dogs welcome and barbecues allowed
Off to the western lakes but want to wander lonely as a cloud instead of being there jam-packed in crowds? Have a look at Whinfell Farm Camp Site: it's secluded, medium sized and in a winning position for scouting around Cockermouth, Buttermere and the highlights of the western Lake District. Such scenic surrounds require no complex facilities and entertainments, so amenities have been kept simple but with thoughtful extra touches including hot showers and hairdryers. The washing-up room has been kitted out with a freezer and laundry facilities to ensure it's easy to keep the tribe fed and cleaned up… and well-behaved dogs are welcome to join the jaunt to the Lakes as long as they're kept on leads while on site. Whinfell also allows barbecues (not campfires, firepits or anything of that ilk, please): just remember to keep them off the ground to prevent damage to the turf. If you want to eat out, it's a leisurely 10-minute trot to the 17th-century Wheatsheaf Inn for top-notch meals as well as a tempting range of local ales; best to book before you set out, as such a setup is unsurprisingly rather popular. A decent night's sleep being a vital ingredient of a happy stay for many folk, the owners request that all guests pipe down after 10.30pm to ensure peaceful slumbers all round.

Liked Guests were helpful and friendly

Disliked Toilets and showers were disgustingly dirty. Bins were full, floors were dirty. There was NOTHING to dry your hands with after washing.

No staff on site, so anyone could have just came in

Local attractions

Buttermere and Loweswater are the nearest lakes to Whinfell Farm Camp Site, each with accompanying villages and circular lakeside walks. Loweswater is managed by the National Trust and has rowing boats available for hire. On land, the western lakes area is as full of things to do as its more central counterparts, with activities such as golfing, cycling, shoreline horse rides and hiking around the Roman heritage, valleys and peaks of Eskdale, Wasdale and the coastal village of Ravenglass. Also take time for an afternoon or day among the mountain bike trails and forest walks of Whinlatter, named by the Forestry Commission as England's only true mountain forest. It's one of the Super 6 mountain bike trails and has the longest purpose-built MTB track in the whole Lake District; find out more in the Whinlatter Forestry Centre. Keswick's Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England and is open to visitors who come for one of the several tours and to climb to the top of the mountain using the original miners' path. And if it's sea you want to see, the Cumbrian coastline at Allonby is about 12 miles away.
