  • Top-notch Lake District caravan park in 130 acres of ancient forest
  • A 10-minute drive to Ambleside for Windermere boat trips
  • Dog-friendly park with woodland trails, tarn and large play area
If a trip to the Lake District National Park for you means plenty of peace, space and lovely natural views, this is the place for you. A couple of miles from Ambleside, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is set within 130 acres of ancient woodland, providing a top-notch location for a stay in this wonderful part of the world. This location is on the site of a former country house – and while that building is long gone, a few handy replacements have sprung up, including a reception building with a shop and several bathroom blocks with all mod cons (think underfloor heating and hot showers as well as accessible facilities and spacious family rooms). There’s also a building housing a well-equipped launderette (with several washing machines and tumble dryers, plus a drying room) and a library so you’ll have something to read while you wait for your clothes. That launderette may well come in useful, as this is a place that lends itself to getting just a bit mucky – for starters, there’s a fab four-acre open space for the kids to run about and play games, plus a large play area with a zipwire, scramble nets and loads of other play kit. There are also woodland trails running through the grounds, leading to the tarn and nature hide, with red squirrels, woodpeckers and deer to spot along the way. This is a large site, but it’s not a place that ever feels crowded, as pitches have been cleverly tucked away in tree-lined glades around the park, giving each area a cosy woodland atmosphere – just the thing for your peaceful Lake District break.

Liked I think we may have just found a new favourite site! Booked fort birthday weekend but due to work commitments we couldn’t arrive until after 8pm. Very few sites allow for such late arrivals so straight away that was a plus! The gentleman who greeted us was fantastic and very friendly and helpful. The site is absolutely beautiful and well maintained! We preordered some pizzas from the food truck (pre booking is a must saw a fair few turned away as they were sold out) Definitely going to be coming back and bringing the rugrats. Would highly recommend this site!

1 bedroom camping pod (six person, no pets)

Liked They say first impressions count; they got it, spot on at Skelwith Fold.
When we arrived at reception, we were met with smiles by all. Everything was explained, and then we were taken to our family Hideaway pod, not just told we were taken by a member of staff, perfect!
Everything was explained again, and there was a bottle of bubbly in the fridge and a large disposable barbecue for us to enjoy.
The family Hideaway pod was spotless and offered beautiful walks for everyone. I would definitely recommend it and will be returning.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (premium)

Liked Excellent location close to Ambleside set in beautiful wooded grounds. Easy cycle access (lots of cycle paths or very quiet roads). Clean, hot showers. Drying room looked handy (although I didn’t need it). Friendly staff and onsite shop was well stocked with all the things you might need including cold beer and wine.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (premium)

Liked Great facilities, lovely setting.

Disliked I didnt realise you needed a special card for the baby changing / family changing and this wasnt pointed out to me when I arrived so the code didnt work

I also wasnt given the code for the toilets on arrival.

The mens bathroom does not have a baby changing matt.

All of the above contributed to not the best experience regarding taking my 2 year old to the bathroom. I think that this could be a simple fix and built in to the information given to you when you arrive - as everyone needs the toilet code and I listed on my booking I have a young child.

Local attractions

As well as having top-notch facilities, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is in a top-notch location for a Lake District break. There are lots of great walks and activities nearby, and staff are always on hand to dish out ideas and tips to help you make the best of it all. Of course you’ll want to see some lakes – perhaps starting with Tarn Hows (15 minutes' drive) before moving on to a steam boat ride on Coniston Water (20 minutes) and a tour of Rydal Water (15 minutes), taking in Rydal Cave and Rydal Mount and Gardens along the way. The big one, of course, is Windermere, just a few minutes' drive from the park and with boat trips available from Ambleside (10 minutes). Around the lake there are various attractions to stop off at, including the National Trust sites at Wray (10 minutes) and Hill Top (20 minutes). If you've got the kids, look instead to places like the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes) and Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (25 minutes).
