  • Top-notch Lake District caravan park in 130 acres of ancient forest
  • A 10-minute drive to Ambleside for Windermere boat trips
  • Dog-friendly park with woodland trails, tarn and large play area
If a trip to the Lake District National Park for you means plenty of peace, space and lovely natural views, this is the place for you. A couple of miles from Ambleside, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is set within 130 acres of ancient woodland, providing a top-notch location for a stay in this wonderful part of the world. This location is on the site of a former country house – and while that building is long gone, a few handy replacements have sprung up, including a reception building with a shop and several bathroom blocks with all mod cons (think underfloor heating and hot showers as well as accessible facilities and spacious family rooms). There’s also a building housing a well-equipped launderette (with several washing machines and tumble dryers, plus a drying room) and a library so you’ll have something to read while you wait for your clothes. That launderette may well come in useful, as this is a place that lends itself to getting just a bit mucky – for starters, there’s a fab four-acre open space for the kids to run about and play games, plus a large play area with a zipwire, scramble nets and loads of other play kit. There are also woodland trails running through the grounds, leading to the tarn and nature hide, with red squirrels, woodpeckers and deer to spot along the way. This is a large site, but it’s not a place that ever feels crowded, as pitches have been cleverly tucked away in tree-lined glades around the park, giving each area a cosy woodland atmosphere – just the thing for your peaceful Lake District break.

What customers say

Beautiful, well-kept site in a stunning woodland setting. Praised for great, clean facilities, spacious pitches, and friendly staff. Good access to walks and local transport. Some noted poor mobile signal/Wi-Fi and a narrow access road, but most guests plan to return.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (premium)

Liked We love everything, from the greeting on arrival to the pitch size (premium). The staff out and about were friendly and helpful. Location was good to Ambleside and surrounding areas. Toilets, showers were spotless at all times. The laundry area was an added bonus. Also a library, thought of everything.

Disliked I would have like the shop to be open a bit longer in the evening but not a deal breaker.

Liked Lovely clean facilities, never an issue with the toilets or showers. Beautiful site, that is clearly well looked after. The park and its facilities are fantastic. Would definitely return and recommend.

Disliked The shop could be done with staying open a little longer. We didn’t bring the correct pegs a not getting the awning up would have been disastrous as our van was full. We called the warden, who was as helpful as he could be and said we needed different pegs but we couldn’t get any them as the shop was shut. Over the stay there was a few times we could have used the shop but as it shut at 17:30 we always missed out.

From the manager: Dear Cindy, thank you for your lovely review and for your kind comments about our facilities, the cleanliness of the site, and our park. We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and that you'd recommend us and return in the future—that means a great deal to us.

We also appreciate your feedback about the shop opening hours. We're sorry you were caught out needing different awning pegs after the shop had closed. We're glad our warden was able to offer some advice, but we understand how frustrating the situation must have been. Your comments regarding the shop's opening times are valuable, and we'll certainly take them into consideration as we continue to review the services we offer our guests.

We look forward to welcoming you back for another enjoyable stay soon.

Liked The site is in a beautiful location with really good pitches. The water pressure was excellent and the facilities including the onsite shop was brilliant.

Disliked If you need signal or WiFi you can forget about it. It is very poor!
It got very noisy with dogs constantly barking and kids screaming.

From the manager: Dear Nikita, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed our beautiful location, spacious pitches, excellent water pressure, and our facilities, including the onsite shop.

We're sorry to hear you were disappointed with the WiFi and noise during your stay. As we're in a rural location, WiFi and mobile signal can be variable and unfortunately cannot be guaranteed. We do make guests aware of this at check-in, as both our WiFi service and mobile coverage can be affected by the surrounding landscape and individual network providers.

We're also sorry that noise from other guests impacted your stay. We have a warden on duty specifically to help with issues such as excessive noise, barking dogs, or disturbances, and we do wish you'd contacted us at the time so we could have investigated and done our best to resolve the situation for you.

Thank you again for your feedback. We appreciate your comments and hope you might consider staying with us again in the future, giving us the opportunity to provide you with the peaceful experience we always strive to deliver.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Warm welcome on arrival, Louise was spot on with the site information. The wardens were friendly with great advice. Pitches were clean on arrival and large enough for a van and awning. Hook ups were easy to use. Facilities on the site very good shop, library and washing machine if need. Toilet blocks were spotless.

Disliked WIFI dips in and out, this was explained at reception

Liked Really well looked after site and good pitches. Hard standing and the premium pitch we had was great.
Everything was spotless and the shop is well stocked.

Disliked Really poor telephone reception and internet isn’t good.
A little tip. If you’re an in experienced driver towing. The road to the site can be tight so take it slow and steady.

It's lovely to know you were happy with your premium hardstanding pitch and that our facilities and well-stocked shop met your expectations.

Thank you also for your helpful feedback about the mobile signal and internet. Due to our beautiful woodland location, coverage can be patchy for some networks, but we appreciate you making future visitors aware. We also appreciate your tip about the approach road—taking it nice and steady is definitely the best way, especially when towing.

From the manager: Dear Kev, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review! We're so pleased to hear you found the site quiet and beautiful—it's exactly the peaceful atmosphere we hope all our guests enjoy.

We also appreciate your feedback about the approach road. As we're nestled in the heart of the woodland, the access can feel a little narrow in places, but taking it slowly and carefully makes the journey much easier.

Liked For a large site it felt very warm & welcoming with great sized pitches that were well laid out. We really liked the location & facilities available. Being in the forest was fantastic and the walks around the woodland a real bonus. The fact that tourers sections were interspersed between static sections really helped to make the site connected rather than segregated and the lovely treees and plants everywhere softened the boundaries beautifully. The shop, reception, library, laundrette, toilets and showers were all of a very high standard and, like the whole site, very well looked after. The bus stops for Ambleside & Coniston being right at the entrance was so convenient but some may struggle with the mile walk down and back along the driveway to get there. We've always been wary of large sites but this one had us wanting to stay longer!

Disliked Nothing.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Angela, thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that your stay changed your perception of larger sites and even left you wishing you could have stayed longer—that's such a lovely compliment.

It's great to know you enjoyed the spacious pitches, woodland setting, and the way the touring and static areas blend together to create a welcoming atmosphere. Our team works hard to keep the facilities and grounds looking their best, so they'll be thrilled to hear your kind comments.

We're also pleased you found the bus stop location convenient for exploring Ambleside and Coniston, and we appreciate you mentioning the walk to the entrance, as it's a helpful tip for future visitors.

We hope to welcome you back for another relaxing stay in the forest very soon!
