  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there’s a playground on site to entertain the latter. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

Liked: Flat camping area.
Not busy.
Dogs welcome.
Hot showers.

Disliked: The attached pub, didn't allow dogs on the carpeted area which meant that there was only a few spaces were we could seat with our dog.
Next to road and railway line.
Not value for money considering the size of our tent.
There was litter in the campsite that should have been picked up.

Liked: The food at the pub

Disliked: Pitches - very very small. Basically 1 normal sized pitch anywhere else split into 2. The info leaflet says to park your car within your pitch but this is actually impossible as only just enough space for caravan!
Toilet/shower block. Very dated and shabby
No WiFi on site despite being advertised as so on pitch up (only available in pub)
Owners dismissive attitude to genuine concerns

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: We stayed on the hard standing pitches with water and electric hook-up. The site was easy to get to, a friend had just bought a motorhome and this was her first trip out in it, so she didn't want to have to navigate thin, windy lanes. The pitches were a nice size and there were a number of picnic tables available that you could move onto your pitch.
The shower block was basic, but clean with ample toilet roll.
The pub was friendly and the food was reasonably priced and tasty, albeit we booked in after a group of 11 diners so had a bit of a wait until our meals were served. There was a singer on the Friday night (which we didn't go to) and a karaoke on the Saturday night.

Disliked: The site is situated next to a railway line and whilst we appreciated there would be some train noise we weren't expecting the significant number of trains running through the night on the Friday and were awoken a number of times.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
