  • Small adults-only motorhome site in Kielder Forest Park
  • Kielder Castle under a mile away; observatory 10 minutes' drive
  • Serviced hardstanding pitches in the UK's largest dark sky park
There's some really excellent hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching to be done in the Northumberland National Park – but if there's one thing this park is really known for, it's surely the fantastic stargazing. A whopping 572 square miles here have been given Gold Tier status for their incredible dark skies, making this the largest International Dark Sky Park in the UK (and the second largest in Europe). If you're travelling in a motorhome, you’ll be able to take full advantage of these fabulous surroundings at Clear Sky Lodge Park, an adults-only touring site on the edge of Ravenshill Forest and with views over the North Tyne Valley. That setting means the views here are gorgeous by day – but they're potentially even better by night, when the starry displays start up. If you're keen to learn more about what you’re seeing, head to nearby Kielder Observatory (10 minutes' drive) for one of their regular events. And this great location also means you'll have plenty to do by day as well, exploring the trails of surrounding Kielder Forest Park, visiting Kielder Castle and heading down to Kielder Water. You might also like to throw in a day trip to the Roman attractions around Hexham (50 minutes' drive away). Preserving the dark-sky status of this park means that facilities here have necessarily been kept to a minimum, but guests have access to toilets, showers and a chemical disposal point. Pitches all have water and electric connections, and they’re on hardstanding that should be accessible in all weathers.

Liked: Quiet and dark skies. Great toilet block and showers washing machines , nice walks on door step, Friendly owner

Disliked: To call it adult only is a bit cheeky as yards away there is another site with park homes on which had children running about, although quiet. I didn’t like the ground as it made chocks difficult to use easily , The chemical waste plug hole had a cover over it and someone had emptied toilet with loads of toilet paper which blocked use until I could clear it.

From the manager: Hi Alun it’s a shame to hear you will not be returning after finding the facility’s great and walks on the doorstep.
The base of the site that is level is constructed of material that is all weather so you can use the pitch all year round without turning muddy. (No chocks required, you are the first of over 1000 guests to comment on this)
It is a child free touring site to prevent disruption to the guests of whom we have many in caravans /campers because we initially let children on site who caused disruption.
All of our lodge owners bar one do not have children but may have family members with children that may come to visit very occasionally so I feel that you are being a little harsh in criticising us for this especially when there children where quite.
Regarding the chemical waste we have trap to prevent wet wipes being disposed of as we are on a septic tank system. It is common courtesy for the last person to clean down the chemical waste after use unless they have filled with wet wipes as we do inspect daily, you would be more than welcome to inform of this matter which would have been resolved.

Liked: The views are most lovely. The toilet block is, as others have mentioned, is fantastic. Lots of lovely trees surrounding the site and we were treated to a fabulous sunset.

Disliked: There isn't any grass surrounding the pitches which would have been nice. There is a lodge park situated just below the site which I wasn't aware of when booking. It was very quiet but just something to be aware of. Also we didn't meet anyone from the site during our stay. (We called the numbers provided on arrival). We didn't need anything but it would have been nice to meet/speak to someone.

From the manager: Thank you for staying with us and leaving a review. We are pleased to hear you would stay with us again.
The site is advertised as a hard standing site, the reason we have no grass is usually it is wet at this time of year and would turn to mud if grass, we are open all year which allows for awnings year round.
The photos of the site with lodges in the background you would have seen in the review photos as you have commented on other reviews of shower block.
We do come round to visit guests if they are outside but do not disturb them if inside, we are sorry if we missed you as you only stayed the one night.
We live and work on site and are available 24-7 by phone or calling at the house for any of your needs, we are here to make your stay as enjoyable as possible without having to many rules and regulations and without intruding on our guests.

Liked: The location and size of pitch, darkness of the park providing amazing star gazing. The facilities were first class, very clean and warm (which was great as evenings and mornings were chilly). Booking & payment straightforward and email ahead of arriving had useful information and gave clear directions so easily located the site. Looking forward to a return visit.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Location was superb. Lovely view. Very convenient for a good local pub. Also for a very good bike hire shop and the round lake path. The facilities were very good. A recently built shower and loo block were warm and well appointed. This was our first such holiday, so we have nothing to compare with, but we would come again for sure. We gave Wi-Fi 5 stars but that’s because our van came with a router. Phone reception was fine (lebara and o2)

Disliked: Nothing

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: The size of the site. The facilities block. Fully serviced aspect.

Disliked: Chemical waste disposal which was backed up. The ground under the water point which was really muddy, as it was grass. Perhaps a couple of slabs around the electricity and water points would be preferable.Lack of wifi on the pitches.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Gaynor thank you for your review of our site and we are very disappointed to hear that you will not be visiting us again.
The chemical waste had been blocked by wet wipes which should not have been disposed of in the chemical waste, all you need to do was let us know and it would have been cleared straight away as we do not check this during the day time because it is expected for the user to hose down after they have finished using.
We will look at placing slabs next to water hook ups on the grass if you have found this an issue as this has not been something that has ever been mentioned before.
We do not advertise WiFi but do provide it for free next to the phone box.
If you inform us of an issue we will go out of our way to resolve any problem that can arise to make your stay as enjoyable and relaxing as possible.

Liked: Very good hardstanding, didnt eben have to level the camper van, just drove in and connected up, electric hook up was fine, mains water next to pitch. Toilets and showers clean. Quiet campsite. Good location, easiest check in and out I've experienced.

Disliked: No phone signal which isn't campsites fault, however WiFi would be great but not sure if that's feasible.

Local attractions

Given how close it is, your first visit should be to Kielder Castle, just under a mile away. It's got a variety of exhibits about the area’s history and wildlife, a lovely café and a bird hide where you can look out for the resident ospreys. Bikes can be hired here, or you can head out on a scenic drive along the toll road. There are plenty of options nearby for walks, of course – and one of the best is the Lakeside Way, an accessible multi-user trail that runs all the way along the 26-mile shoreline of Kielder Water (10 minutes’ drive). Look out for native red squirrels as you go – Kielder is home to about half of the country's population – or head to the Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre (15 minutes) to see other local wildlife. If you're into mountain biking, you may like to cross the Scottish border to 7 Stanes - Newcastleton (25 minutes); if it’s history that’s more your thing, try heading to Hadrian's Wall to explore places like the Temple of Mithras (45 minutes) and Housesteads Roman Fort (50 minutes).
