Hedging around the caravan site

  • Small family-run caravan site at a North Yorkshire golf course
  • York city centre 15 minutes' drive; designer shopping outlet 10 mins
  • Woodland walks and several golf activity options on site
Woodland walks on one side and a golf course on the other – now doesn’t that sound like a little bit of a fabulous location? This is the setup on offer at Swallow Hall, a small family-run caravan site in the North Yorkshire countryside a couple of miles from the village of Wheldrake and six miles from the centre of York. This place is something of a dream for golfing types – in fact the caravan site is inside the grounds of Swallow Hall Golf Course, which has a pay-and-play 18-hole facility that doesn’t require any tee time booking. Guests also have the option of playing on the 9-hole Academy course (par 28), honing their skills at the short game area or extending the day with some time on the floodlit driving range. Meanwhile, non-golfers have direct access to Forestry Commission woodland walks, or may prefer to get out for a day of retail therapy at the Designer Outlet York, 10 minutes’ drive away. Pitches have access to an eco-friendly modern toilet and shower block; please note that only eco-friendly biodegradable toilet fluid can be used on site.

What customers say

Swallow Hall is a peaceful, well-kept campsite loved for its spacious, private sites and excellent modern restrooms. Proximity to York's park and ride and woodland walks are big pluses. Some guests noted no specific dishwashing area or many dining choices in the clubhouse, but friendly staff and the serene vibe make it a highly recommended repeat stay.

Liked Pitches are lovely, big and private.
It was quite quiet when we were there so we enjoyed the peace.
Toilets and showers were lovely and clean, seemed to be cleaned regularly.

Disliked Perhaps more than one washing up sink would be good. When we were there it wasn’t a problem but I imagine during peak season it can be.
Just something to note, the clubhouse is only open some days and closes at 6pm. There’s nothing else walkable.

Liked Plenty of space, mostly grass not hard standing, free to pick own plot. Very clean and nicely sheltered by woods. Golf course a bonus, tried driving range out, kindly lent clubs. Good base for York.

Liked Spacious pitches and designed with privacy in mind. Lovely hot showers and very clean facilities. Very helpful owner when there was a problem with reverse polarity on the EHU.

Disliked Bit noisy (early morning mower on adjacent golf course) but not excessive. No WiFi .

Had to drive to Pool Bridge swimming up the road as no safe footpath to walk there but that's not down to the campsite.

Liked Peaceful and spacious - was secure due to keypad barrier system. Toilets and showered were very clean. Small pot wash area.
Lovely stay if you are looking for relaxation but close enough to the shopping outlet, park and ride and everything York has to offer.

Disliked Nothing

Liked Nice wide pitches with some privacy offered on some of the pitches by the hedging (Note: sometimes there were two pitches between hedges). Even though pitches faced each other, there was a very wide gap which helped feel like they were more private and not at all on top of each other. There was lots of space for our 4 year old to burn off steam and not be encroaching on others. He loved picking the wild blackberries.

The showers and toilets were clean, though the site was very quiet during our stay. They looked like they had been recently renovated/decorated and cleaned regularly. The pot wash facilities were the cleanest I’ve seen.

There were lovely forestry walks from the site, though we didn’t explore them fully.

The proximity to York Outlets and York Park&Ride was fantastic. 5 minutes to the P&R and 20 mins bus into town.

Liked The toilets are by far the best toilets on any site we’ve been on. Well stocked. Very clean. Showers are imaculate and don’t have the silly button to keep pressing.

Local attractions

When you’re not playing golf on site (or perhaps while your other half is on the course), there are plenty of outings to be had in the surrounding area. If you’d like to soak up some more of the local scenery, you could settle in for some coarse fishing at Raker Lakes (five minutes’ drive), stroll around the various themed areas of Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (15 minutes) or stretch your legs on a walk at Skipwith Common National Nature Reserve (20 minutes). City time is right on hand too, and in the wonderful place that is York (15 minutes), where you could easily spend several days exploring the minster, the Shambles, the National Railways Museum and the city walls, or taking boat trips and riverside walks. And that’s before you’ve splashed the cash at Designer Outlet York (10 minutes). For different days out, plan trips to the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial (15 minutes), Selby Abbey (20 minutes) or York Bird of Prey Centre (half an hour).
