  • Farm site near Boltby Forest, in the North York Moors National Park
  • Rievaulx Abbey 20 minutes’ drive; York an hour
  • Firepits and picnic benches; courtyard space with seats and hammock
High Paradise Farm is very much a wildlife haven. Sitting alongside Boltby Forest, in the North York Moors National Park, this site attracts hares, foxes and other beasties, but it’s also a nice place for guests (and their dogs) to find a base for their adventures, build stick houses in the forest or simply revel in the outdoor spaces. High Paradise is on the eight-mile band between Thirsk (10 minutes’ drive) and Helmsley (25 minutes), but don’t be fooled: the site is still rural. The roads leading to either of the nearby towns are narrow, twisty and a little bumpy, but it is well worth the journey, whether to visit The World Of James Herriot (Thirsk) or the National Centre for Birds of Prey (Helmsley). The skies are pretty special at night time, and it’s quiet here too, aside from the sound of birdsong. The facilities around the site include an amenities block with toilets, a shower and a dishwashing area that may come in handy after a firepit (each pitch has its own picnic bench and firepit). There’s also a chilled-out communal courtyard space with seats and a hammock. In Boltby (10 minutes), you’ll be able to pick your adventure – perhaps horse trekking with the local stables or picking up the long-distance Cleveland Way, which runs around the national park. For a pub trip, Hawnby (15 minutes) has just the place. There are a few other pubs within around 15 minutes’ drive of the site, and Helmsey’s eateries are a little further away.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: What a campsite! We went midweek so it was nice and quiet, but when we arrived we were greeted by such a friendly lady who helped us get our bearings on the sight and told us where everything was. Each pitch having it's own fire pit was great, and we even got to say hi to some goats in the field next to the site. I love when a campsite, isn't just a big field, and this one had so much character!

Disliked: Nothing.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: High Paradise Farm and Campsite are both somewhat out the way from any villages or towns. This benefits the campsite as it is a relaxed peaceful environment with only the birds and farm animals to worry about.
Ginny and her staff were very welcoming and guided me around the site.
The food and drinks from the tea room were served fresh and tasted great.
You can see right through into the kitchen area and can see the great detail of cleanliness.
Dogs were very much welcome inside and outside of the tea room and in the campsite.
Access to the Cleveland Way was on the door step and had the joys of seeing many walking past and few hours or cyclists.

Disliked: There wasn't much to dislike

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Lovely camping field with plenty of space. Facilities are basic but clean. The kids loved meeting the farm dogs, especially Pumpkin who became a firm favourite. The owner was super friendly and helpful, giving us ideas for biking routes. Location is fantastic for walking and biking and the local area is very picturesque. The on site cafe is also great

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Loved how quiet it was, the pitches are fantastic, a new solid picnic bench and big fire pit by each one. Lovely cafe and very popular, alot busier than I'd expect for the location. The on site dogs are great, pumpkin was a family favourite!
Will definitely be returning at some point (although we like to try new sites alot)

Disliked: 1 road in is incredibly bumpy, took 10minutes to get along, lesson learnt and used the other road the rest of the time. Not really a complaint mind.
Electric would be ideal, to keep a fridge running. But it's not essential and we knew before arriving.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Great plots with plenty of space, a picnic bench and fire pit. We were able to get a plot right next to our friends and had a great 3 nights. There was a compostable toilet close by and then flushable toilets a short walk away. Only one shower but you never had to wait that long for it or for the washing up area, and the water was good and hot! There's a tea room on site and sheep and horses for the kids to look at.

Disliked: Nothing really, it was a lovely site with friendly owners. My only minor dislike was it was tricky to wash little children's hands after the toilet as the washing up sinks were high up.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: It's such a picturesque yet practical site - pitching up amongst the trees meant we were very sheltered on a particularly windy weekend. We really did appreciate the contact from the owner on our day of arrival, keeping us up to date with the damage caused by Storm Lilian - and were impressed it was all sorted and back to normal by the time we got there.

The picnic table and fire pit with each pitch was particularly welcome - such a good idea and so useful and enjoyable.

The location is fantastic. Remote enough to feel wild, yet close enough to Thirsk for practicalities (for us, we needed somewhere close by to charge our car). And we loved that it was such a convenient place for walking routes - and that the HPF website details a variety of them so well.

And it was lovely on our last morning, after packing up, to be able to have a butty and a cuppa at the tea room. I love a good tea room and it's such a charming and friendly place, filled with other people just appreciating the outdoors. A wonderful atmosphere.

Disliked: I didn't realise from what I read in advance just how basic and open the sanitation facilities would be. It wasn't a problem for us, given that we've been to plenty far more basic campsites than this, but I suppose this is just a note of awareness to readers to expect functional but very basic facilities.

(And for future note, HPF team: if you redo the toilet block at any point in the future, could you consider creating more space between the loos and the door please. At the moment the leg room between the loo and the door is like a Ryanair flight, making it rather difficult to use.)

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: We loved the small site with the trees, and the lovely touches of the picnic tables and fire pits. It had a lovely wild feel to it. It's also totally safe to let the kids roam a bit.

Really well located close to Thirsk, Sutton Bank and Helmsley

Disliked: More showers would be great, but this didn't compromise our stay at all. The info is really clear.

Liked: The location was amazing. Plenty of space between pitches which all had their own picnic table and fire pit.
Facilities were good and clean.
Liked that there was a family area and solo traveller/adult side.
Extra thanks to Ginny for providing some batteries that I’d forgotten! Very prompt when responding to queries.
Amazing clear skies at night.

Local attractions

The atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (20 minutes’ drive) sit on the right bank of the River Rye. Established in the 12th century, this Cistercian abbey fell victim to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s. You can learn more about the building’s history in the museum, which exhibits masonry fragments and stone carvings. Are you in Yorkshire or Provence? You might find it difficult to tell the difference at Yorkshire Lavender (40 minutes), a 60-acre lavender farm in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. Themed areas include a lavender maze, a wildflower meadow and a Mediterranean garden, plus a sculptural recreation of a cricket match… Whether you’re into Vikings, railways or chocolate, York (an hour) has a museum for you. It’s also worth taking a stroll along the city walls and, of course, visiting the spectacular York Minster. Feeling fit? Climb the 275 steps to the top of the Central Tower for far-reaching views of the city.
