Camping field by the brew-pub
The camping field

  • Basic campsite adjoining a pub near Pickering in North Yorkshire
  • A 20-minute drive to Flamingo Land Resort; 40 to the beach at Whitby
  • All-day catering and brewery tours available at the pub
Like the sound of wild camping within staggering distance of a brew-pub? Pick yourself a pitch at The New Inn, a campsite in the North Yorkshire village of Cropton, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. Back to basics this campsite may be, with simple grass pitches sheltered by trees, but there are a fair few advantages thrown in to make life easy for you. For starters, there’s no need to worry about getting the stove going first thing in the morning, as breakfasts are available in the adjoining pub – what better way to start your day than with a full English and a decent cup of coffee or tea? And it's not just breakfast – delicious home-cooked dishes are served throughout the day (although if you prefer the self-catering route, barbecues are allowed on the pitches). You can also sample beers brewed at the bottom of the pub garden – tours of the brewery can be arranged with the owners on arrival at the site. Please note that facilities on site are fairly minimal – there are toilets and running water but no power, so bring torches with you from home so you can find the way back to your pitch from the pub at night.

What customers say

This no-frills campsite is a great value for a peaceful getaway. Guests loved being near The New Inn pub for affordable, tasty food and local brews. It's perfectly situated for countryside walks. Facilities are basic (toilets, running water), though some note dated amenities and no hot showers, which matches the price.

Liked Dat de camping nog open was

Disliked Toilet gebouw. De water aansluiting van de urinoirs waren afgesloten. Geen warm water. Verlichting in het toilet gebouw was matig. (Niet voldoende om je te scheren bv) Maar ja, met koud water scheren is ook niet fijn.

Liked I stayed over one night for the beer festival. What a great night. Good beer, good food and great bands. The aggregate at the entrance to the camping field has made a big difference.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Pub is great, didn't see much of it as the beer festival downstairs took up all our time and was amazing, bands were great, staff were lovely, shame we only did 1 night, wasn't much around but knew that before we booked and didn't bother us, was a great night to spend for our belated anniversary. Definitely going back next year for the festival and hopefully a summer one if they put it on

My facilities/activities review was divided - 3 for facilities, 10 for activities so had to go half way

Disliked Toilets for camping were 2 portaloo's which didn't seem maintained, 1 didn't flush properly, but was clean non the less, will be looking at a tent toilet for next time though just incase

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Good selection of beers, ciders & lagers for the beer festival. We enjoyed the food their & a good atmosphere. Two camping fields we were on field two, was a bit soft but they had the 4x4 response guy there who was full of knowledge. Felt good that if we were to get stuck ,we came close but we got off the field help was not far away. Enjoyed the jamming session on Sunday some good local musicians & good singers. Would go back next year enjoyed it.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked It's a basic campsite with porta cabin toilets, with cold water only. They always have toilet roll in them which is a blessing and they are relatively clean.
We love the pub, and enjoyed our time there for the beer festival. The selection of beers was good and the live bands were great.

Disliked Would love the toilets to be heated and some electric!!

Local attractions

Camping at The New Inn puts you in prime position for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors on two legs or two wheels. You could even try travelling under steam, as trains on the vintage North Yorkshire Moors Railway leave from Pickering (10 minutes’ drive) and stop at Goathland (half an hour – and as seen in the Harry Potter films) on their way to the East Yorkshire coast. This is also a great base for families, as the thrill rides and animal encounters of Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes) should easily keep everybody entertained all day. To run off any excess energy, spend a day on the high ropes and Segway trails at Go Ape Dalby (25 minutes), or let the kids loose on the beach at Whitby (40 minutes) or Scarborough (45 minutes). To add some culture into the mix, visit the Gothic-era minster and see how the Vikings lived at JORVIK Viking Centre in historic York (45 minutes), or mug up on World War II events at Eden Camp Modern History Museum (20 minutes). Closer to base, Pickering Castle (10 minutes) offers up exhibitions in the chapel along with wonderful views over the moors.
