  • Small North Yorkshire touring site on the edge of Pickering
  • Just outside the North York Moors; half an hour's drive from the coast
  • A 10-minute walk from town centre; bus stop nearby
Whether you're planning on hiking or having a light potter around North Yorkshire, it's a breeze from Lakeside, less than a mile from the centre of Pickering. Indeed, you’re likely to become very well-acquainted with the North York Moors National Park and Dalby Forest, both of which are just a few minutes’ drive away. Just off the A170, this small site is in a very handy location and such a setting also means it’s easy to head to the coast for a bit of splashing in the sea at Scarborough (half an hour away). Leaving the car on site for a bit? No problem. It’s possible to walk into town in 10 minutes or so to hit the shops, pubs, takeaways, restaurants and the like. When you're rather craving an outing further afield, just hail the bus from the stop a couple of minutes’ walk away. The friendly staff say they’re always happy to answer questions, dish out local advice or lend a hand to help guests with whatever they need. When it comes to facilities, you’ll be sorted out with waste disposal and recycling, a chemical waste facility and a caravan washing area (but please note that there are no toilets or showers here). Dogs are also welcome, and they’re not the only things given the green light; you're also welcome to bring along a barbecue or firepit for a warm and relaxing evening.

Local attractions

Those of you who are new to this part of land might want to get to know a bit of the local history. If so, there are a few places to start, including the 20th-century history museum at Eden Camp (15 minutes’ drive), in the grounds of what was once a war prisoner camp. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (25 minutes) is all about experiencing heritage steam train journeys, while Castle Howard (half an hour) keeps alive the life and history of a huge stately home. After a light-hearted day at the seaside? Scarborough (half an hour) and Whitby (35 minutes) are some prime patches for that. And for places that celebrate nature at its finest instead, Dalby Forest Visitors Centre (20 minutes) will get you on track for the right forest trails, while The Yorkshire Arboretum (half an hour) has handsome meadows, glades and lakes. For those of you with the family all along for the holiday including kids, Flamingo Land Resort theme park (15 minutes) is one of those places that are likely to entertain – yes, there are real flamingos, as well as rides.
