General

  • Family-run site at the former railway station in Masham
  • Ripon and Fountains Abbey less than half an hour's drive away
  • A 20-minute walk from the town centre, pubs and breweries

Keep your North Yorkshire holiday plans on track at Old Station Caravan Park, a quiet, well-established holiday park on the site of a former railway station. Set on the eastern side of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in a rural setting, this site is on the edge of Masham, a lovely little town with cafés and pubs to peruse at your leisure.

This family-run site is roughly a 20-minute walk from the town centre, where two breweries – Theakston’s and Black Sheep – are on hand for beer fans who want to see where their favourite ales are crafted. If you’re not up for the walk, or want to get out to more far-flung destinations, there’s also a bus stop just outside the gates that can whisk you off to various places without the need to drive.

Some of the things you may like to visit nearby include the Dales peaks of Ingleborough and Whernside (both of which are visible from site), the famed cheese producers of Wensleydale and heritage spots like Fountains Abbey. York, Harrogate and Ripon are all easily doable for day trips too.

On-site facilities include a small shop, a laundry room, a washing-up point and a well-maintained heated amenities block. The team at Old Station Caravan Park pride themselves on their attention to detail and doing their utmost to ensure a splendid stay, so just ask if you've got any queries.

This is a lovely small site, the owner was so welcoming. The toilets and showers were heated, lovely and clean and warm. We had breakfast in the on site cafe and it was massive and well cooked. We will definitely go back again

    Disliked:

The walk into town is further than expected and although there is a footpath, the traffic is manic

We had a lovely relaxing two night stay at this friendly site. It was easy to access from the A1 and within easy walking distance of Masham, although if you're not interested in the Brewery tours there was not much to do there on a weekday in October. The site is peaceful, the itch was level and the facilities block was both warm and spotlessly clean. The site wifi worked fine and all they ask in return for the password is a donation to the Air Ambulance. We didn't try the cafe as it was closed during out stay. The site has many rabbit visitors, particularly in the evening which entertained our dog no end! We will definitely consider staying again if in the area.

We enjoyed our stay and the BBQ hut was nice and cosy. We liiked having space outside for the children and the gate made it feel more secure for them. The facilities were nice and clean and we would stay again.

    Disliked:

I only gave a 4 star as the beds did not fit properly and the cushions kept falling off through the night. Fold up stools for around the fire would have been nice so the table could have been used for meal times. The little camping ones you can buy would suffice. Also I didnt think it appropriate to have a hot kettle on a plastic tray very safe. A space could be made next to the door with a shelf for this to make it safe around children. There are 7 beds in the hut which on booking said it slept 6, maybe the extra bed could be taken out for things that would make the hut more efficient.

Local attractions

It's really quite a breeze to get to Ripon (20 minutes' drive) – the cathedral city can be reached by car simply by driving south for a while down the A6108, and there’s also a bus service that departs from Masham several times daily that should get you there in about half an hour. Want a sense of what it was like to be banged up in the 1800s? Make tracks for Ripon’s well-reviewed Prison and Police Museum.

Fountains Abbey (25 minutes) is another must-see for all fans of history. The 12th-century abbey itself was all but destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, but its striking ruins still stand today against a brilliant backdrop of 800 acres of meticulously-tended water gardens.

For food-focused jaunts, meanwhile, you could set your sights on Pateley Bridge (30 minutes), home to The Oldest Sweet Shop in the World (certified by no less an authority than Guinness World Records), or alternatively stick to savoury flavours in Hawes (50 minutes), where cheese is on the agenda at Wensleydale Creamery.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (4.7 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey (7.9 miles)
  • Richmond Castle (12.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Braithwaite Hall (7.3 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden (7.9 miles)
