Primitive grass tent campsite
Liked Stayed one night with my brother-in-law (separate booking) to show him the ropes.
Lovely little campsite with amazing views and no light pollution at night. Arrival and setup were smooth, no issues. The site had four toilets—two for women, two for men—plus a shower and a water supply. The toilets were clean and tidy, though they could have been a bit larger to make stepping up and down easier.

We were looking for as close…
Primitive grass tent campsite
Liked We were looking for as close to wild camping as we dared with four young children and this place was great. Beautiful spot, quiet on a Thursday night and busier on Friday but not at all cramped. The composting toilets were cleaner and far more pleasant than all of the public toilets we used during our trip. Loads of space for the children to play, plus they loved the games and goal provided. It was windy and sunny on the first night, and still and grey on the second - British weather! The hill up from West Witton was steeper than I expected but my two older sons (9 and 11) managed it no problem. This was our first camping trip away from home with children and it ticked every box, I have no hesitation in recommending Penhill and absolutely would return again.

Beautiful location, needs proper drinking water.
Primitive grass tent campsite
Liked Very beautiful place with nice views. Good location near to west whitton and Leyburn.
All campsites are expensive these days and this was good as it is one of the cheaper ones.
Compost toilets new and very clean. Washing up sinks outdoors were fine (no shelter over them).
Nice place for children to run around and a few animals to see in surrounding fields.
Disliked Loses a star for being on top of a very windy hill! Our tent got ripped. Not at all sheltered from the forces of nature.
The drinking water came from a natural spring. This is fine to risk if you dont have very young kids. The site owners said that they recommended boiling the water before drinking. We didn't have facilities to boil large amounts of drinking water and it was hot weather. I wish this had been made clearer when booking the campsite or we probably wouldn't have gone here because of this reason. We still had a nice time though.

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback, we are glad you enjoyed your stay.
Thankfully it’s not always windy, we’ve just been unlucky the past two weekends, unfortunately we can’t control the weather.
It does state on pitch up that there is no drinking water, as it isn’t treated mains water but spring water.
Toilets rustic but clean. Lovely location but only if it's not windy.

Liked Location
Disliked Facilities very basic. Didn't like the fact there were only two outdoor sinks to wash pots, hands and brush teeth. Ok for a night or two but if you were staying a week and the campsite was full there would be a queue for the one shower.

From the manager: Sorry you feel like you needed to give us such a low score. The site is advertised as a nearly wild campsite so the facilities are basic for that reason. You mention the toilets are rustic but clean but have given us a very low score for cleanliness? We only have one shower currently, as being a new site we weren’t sure on how popular we’d be. As we have had many excellent reviews and are getting busier quite quickly, another shower is being installed.
