  • Friendly site between the North Yorkshire Moors and Howardian Hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Helmsley and 25 minutes from Malton
  • Small shop on site and a pub 20 minutes’ walk away; dog-friendly
Moors, hills or market towns? Nab yourself a spot within reach of all three at Wombleton Caravan Park, which is in a little nook of Ryedale between the North Yorkshire Moors and the Howardian Hills, 50 minutes’ drive away from the east coast. This is a very friendly place, personally run by the Willoughby family. Those merry vibes are continued over in the local pub, which is 20 minutes’ walk away, and serves wholesome and unpretentious pub food, wines, spirits, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Of course, it has some splendid Yorkshire ales too (of the likes of Black Sheep, Theakstons and John Smiths). The small site has generously-sized pitches, all with electric hook-up. Facilities are splendid too. There are wifi and recycling facilities. Make use of the ladies and gents toilets, which has two individual private cubicles (with their own hand basins), as well as an indoor washing-up room with hot water, power showers, hairdryers, a shaver and powerpoints for your own appliances. There’s also a modern, clean toilet block with an accessible family toilet. The small shop on site stocks all your general groceries, along with a few caravan accessories, gas and charcoal for the barbecues. Next door is a small lending library with informational brochures (open day and night, so no matter if you’re a morning person or night owl). Wombleton Village is well-situated just a few miles from a few gorgeous North Yorkshire market towns. So, flock to the weekly outdoor markets in Helmsley (10 minutes’ drive), between the valleys of Bilsdale and Ryedale. Thirsk (half an hour) and Kirkbymoorside (10 minutes) also have regular markets; Kirkbymoorside’s market is every Wednesday, with craft stalls, bread stalls and cheese, meat and fish vans, among other things.

Liked We arrived for the weekend in the middle of a torrential downpour but the team onsite made us feel very welcome and helped us get checked in quickly and efficiently so that we could crack on with battling the elements and setting the tents up. Emailed before we arrived to request neighbouring pitches and received a prompt response from James confirming this request. Great value for money for the weekend for 2 adults in a tent with electric hook up and travelling with dogs.

The site is immaculately tidy and clean and very secure.
The toilet blocks were outstanding with multiple toilet cubicles sinks and showers. They were also spotlessly clean
Well kept level electric tent pitches with ample space to park at the side of your tent. No concerns with the electricity supply to the tent and wifi available on site which had a consistent signal. Ample space for a gazebo should you need one.
Great area to walk your dog and able to let them off the lead if you can be assured they have recall ( no chance with my Jack Russell!)
Multiple washing up sinks to keep things running smoothly
The team onsite were so helpful, directed us to our pitch , gave us clear and helpful information about the site, local events and suggestions for where to visit.
There is a very well stocked shop on site , stocks a little bit of everything really.
Lots of places to visit nearby . We ventured into Helmsley with its wide selection of independant shops and bakeries selling a variety of wonderful local produce. Also took a drive through Malton and went for lunch at The Ham & Cheese at Scagglethorpe ( amazing). Only a short distance from York where there is an exceptionally large camping store should you need anything not available on site.
Locally there are also multiple places within a reasonable distance where you can charge an Electric Car should you need to.
We can totally understand why this site
has such amazing reviews and such a high average score . It is very well deserved and no doubt hard earned by the team.
Top tip: make sure you take good quality pile driver/ rock tent pegs - it makes it easier

Disliked Nothing on site . Unfortunately couldn’t find the off switch for the rain!

From the minute we arrived we knew we were going to love it.

Liked Everything! This is now our favourite site and we will be back! It’s a small site so it’s quiet which is what we wanted. Everyone was really friendly but…the family who run it are just brilliant! It’s well kept, clean shower blocks, no silly rules, just go and enjoy the peace and relaxation. Can’t wait to go back. PS fishing is a must!

Fabulous site.

Liked Our 2nd stay at this lovely site. The owners are helpful and friendly, available, but discrete.
The tent pitches are flat and spacious with electric and very nearby water.
The shower block is great, lovely hot showes, the additional cost is minimal, 2x20p is more than enough. The cubicles are a good size with places for towel, toiletries, etc. It's clean and modern, with music playing, a nice extra!
4 indoor washing up spaces, which were also clean and modern with plenty of hot water.
There is so much to do in the immediate and medium vicinity. The coast and York are easily a day trip, but the nearer towns and moors are lovely.
We were there mid week in school term time and the whole site was very quiet, it did get busier on the Fridsy, but it was still quiet and comfortable, just a little more campsite 'bussle'.
We will definitely go again.

Liked Lovely welcome, very friendly, very peaceful, toilets and shower blocks spotless can’t wait to stay again.

Disliked Not a dislike as such as you are aware when looking at the sites description, I didn’t see much to entertain young children, but if you are looking for quiet, peaceful, and friendly you won’t find much better.

Liked We absolutely loved our stay. The site is beautiful very peaceful and well maintained and the disused airfield is the added bonus for evening walks and nature watching. The showers are hot which isn’t often what we expect when camping and spotlessly clean. We will definitely be back again.

Disliked There is nothing for children which can put some people off but for us this was what we wanted as we were looking for peace and quiet.
WiFi wasn’t great but was nice to be off grid.

Will definitely return to this park.

Liked This was one of the best caravan parks I've stayed at. The facilities were spotless with plenty of hot, strong water to shower in. The washing up area was clean and again, plenty of hot water. The staff were really friendly and attentive. The park is secure with no noise after 10.30pm.

Disliked No ball games allowed which is restrictive for the kids. The closest pub doesn't open until 3.30pm!

One of the best in yorkshire hands down !

Local attractions

Take yourself to a historical site: Duncombe Park (15 minutes’ drive) is known as one of Yorkshire’s finest and in Helmsley (10 minutes), there’s a walled garden and the 900-year-old Helmsley Castle. Rievaulx Abbey (15 minutes) is a stunning ruin and museum, and the scenery is just as stunning, in a valley in the North York Moors. Where else might you flock to for stunning scenery? Yorkshire Lavender (20 minutes) is a clear contender, with a 60-acre lavender farm set across the Yorkshire hills. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (20 minutes) steam train will also send you through the North York Moors scenery at a pace. However, those historic sites are not yet over; this is Yorkshire, after all. Castle Howard (20 minutes) is a grand 18th-century home just 15 miles from historic York (45 minutes).
